I need some help

I know this forum is for tool but I have a problem. I have a culvert that is about 20 ft long. And its about 1/2 full of dirt what tool do I need to clean it out. (short of a fire hose) This is a driveway culvert and I really don't want to dig the whole thing up.

Take a long rod. like a re-bar and fasten a string on it and pull the string through. Tie a log chain to the string and pull it through. Cut a heavy block of wood somewhat smaller than the culvert. Tie a TRACTOR to the chain and pull the block through. Have a heavy wire or another chain to the other end of the block of wood to pull it back out in case something goes wrong. May have to repeat a couple times

A fire hose may be the best solution. Years ago I
had a basement drain tile, over 300 ft long, get
choked. Had to rent a very high pressure 4 cylinder
powered pressure washer machine with a long hose to
open it. I think it could generate like 10000 psi.
It wasn't cheap. It did the job.

Neighbor has a 10 inch x 30 ft steel tile at the
end of his drive. Packed full. Digging it up is the
only solution.

you could get some PVC pipe maybe 3/4 inch or 1/2
inch depending on you water pressure glue a hose
pipe fitting on one end and use it like a pressure
washer

Hi Davy,

Do you have access from both ends? What's the diameter? If it's a 16" pipe, just to choose a size at random, then it's got about 14 cu. ft. of dirt in it, say 1/2 a yard. That might weigh between 1,000 and 1,200 lbs depending on the nature of the soil and how saturated it is. I think 60 acre hillside's solution is very clever, but it depends on being able to move all the dirt at one time. I'd worry that there's a high probability of pulling the dirt into a plug within a few feet, and damaging the culvert. Be careful if you try that.

A much more difficult way to remove the dirt, but without the danger of doing damage, would be to attach something to the handle of a hoe so that you could eventually get it 10' into the culvert, and start dragging the dirt out from both ends. You could try the tractor method regularly until there was enough dirt out of the way for it to work.

Well the way an electrician does it is push a snake through [ electricians 1/4" snake not plumber] Then a 1/4 " rope then a mandrel which is a series of red plastic circles from small to slightly less than the pipe diameter. These are already tied together on the mandrel. If that fails get bigger rope and tie to truck and watch out when it breaks through. I have seen them fly to the top of the utility pole spewing gravel and stones.

You might talk with your county engineer. they have tools to do that. Probbly won't cost you a thing either. They need to keep the water flowing through a ditch.

Thanks for the ideas guys. I can find a small garden tractor tire I'll put a chain on each side. That way if something bad happens I can either back it up or keep pulling I believe that the tire will collapse.(Those were really good ideas)
