I have had this in my toolbox for 45 yrs. now. I used to use it a lot to repair a certain part of many brands of tractors. Testing you oldtime tractor guys. What was it used for??

I know I'm wrong as to its real use but that looks very much like a Harley-Davidson pinion gear puller which pulls the pinion gear off the shaft. So I can only guess it pulls a gear from some shaft. But I know in five minutes five smart guys on here will say IH reverse gear this or that or whatever it exactly is.Hold shaft with center ,ball protects shaft, claw reaches behind gear. So I have nothin' .But these always get me curious for sure.

I have one in my box just like that from Snap On. It is used to pull the power steering pulley off of Ford power steering pumps.

This tool is only about 4" long fully extended, and the jaw opening on the end will only accept a shaft aboth 5/8" diamiter. Again, it is used to service a component, commmon to many brands of vintage tractors.

I vote against power steering pully puller (even though it looks similar) because you could never pull off a pully with just a knurled head on the screw.

Absolutely correct. I used one many times teaching students how to properly remove the snap ring on a Delco starter vintage 1960's +

Worked at a starter shop for years. Never knew there was a tool for those. An open end wrench slipped over the shaft pops them right off.

I have two different sizes of them. One fits the 10MT type starters and the other fits the 30 & 35 MT series.

Looks like the knurling is pretty much gone on the center screw on yours.
