What are these?

Bought a tool chest with a few tools in it from a lady who's husband had passed. She said he was a "pattern maker" at a machine shop.
They range from 3/32 to 17/32 in 1/64 increments.
Any idea what they are? Thanks Dan

Set of centre punch transfer punchs.
Match punch diameter to existing hole, centre point marks object below for same hole position.

10 bucks or so at any of the usual China-tool places. Got mine years ago and have used and used and used them--handier than a shirt pocket! Like most things from the Land of Almost Right, some tweaking may be in order (my 1/4" one miked at 0.253" and needed a quick kiss with some emery paper chucked up in my mini-lathe to knock it back to size before it would fit properly) but still worth many times the cost of admission in time saved and accuracy gained.

I will give you a tip. Use bluing and tap those lightly as a hard blow will chip the tip off. Just place the snug diameter in the hole and spin a mark onto the bluing then remove and use a centerpunch. If you make a part first locate one hole then drill and place a bolt securing the work .Now lay-out all the rest of the holes while the old part is layed on the new part, bolted down. This will keep you accurate. It is very useful for laying out through holes on a bolted down cover . along with a bunch of other transfer uses.
Judging by the wood those may be an older made in uSA set. Anything ordered today will be imported hence the chance of chipping the tip. You may be able to strike those but why take a chance of chipping one.

Starret made those for years till China got involved,as a retired tool and die maker I have a couple sets that look just like yours, the good ones don't chip away and will last a long time and can be resharpened like some of yours appear to be.

DR...thanks for the tips.. I went right out to the shop and made some gaskets with a couple of these...worked pretty good. Guess I better look through that tool box to see what I can find...Dan

They're transfer punches.

But - more important to this board is they're great for setting rivets in brake shoes.

For brake shoes from an old john deere where you can buy just the pad itself.

Put one upside down in a vice as an anvil, sized just small enough to fit into the couterbore on the pad.

Use the pointy end of another one like a punch.

Put the point into the open end of the hollow rivet - and hammer away at it - and the point rolls the shell of the rivet out and around nice and evenly.

Looks like a pro did it when you're done.

Not what they were made for but when you need to easy out a broken off bolt or stud that has snapped off below flush and a perfect center to drill is critical these do a fine job.
You run the risk of destroying one but to save say a crankshaft it is well worth it.
