Needing a new trailer braker controller

Well I am in need of a new trailer brake controller. I am looking at the Tekonsha Prodigy P3. This will be for a 2011 Chevy Silverado hauling tractors 5,000 lbs and under on a 10 ton dual exle 18' equipment trailer. We do small farming and need to trailer our equipment once every two weeks during growing season. I kind of think the P3 is overkill, however it has great reviews all over the internet and is not much more money over the earlier P2. Anyone own either one or have any experience with them?

Love my Prodigy. Don't know what series it is. Bought it in late 90's for a F250 diesel, moved it to a new F350 diesel truck in 2002. Still going strong. Excellent for different size trailers. Can dial it down for a 2 axle stock trailer and dial it up for a 13K 5th wheel and 3 axle gooseneck. Thing I really like is that you can adjust the power rating then use boost (3 levels) to make it more aggressive on how fast it applies the brakes. Very helpful on the heavier trailers.

Would buy another in a new york minute...

I have the P3 on my 02 Powerstroke truck. and have had a few other Teckonsha controllers on prior vehicles. They all have had very good reliability. But my disappointment with the P3 is that it is menu controlled. I wear polarized bifocal sunglasses usually for driving. The polarizing of the glasses means I can notsee anything on the menu screen, and the bifocals mean I can not read the screen anyway. So I sometimes mess it up (operator error). Years (decades) ago I had brake controllers that used the hydraulic pressure from the master cylinder to actuate the degree of braking, and found that system to be faultless and very controllable. If I was able to make the best decision now, I would probably go for the truck maker's integrated electronic brake control. That works correctly with the ABS every truck now has. On Ford trucks, their system was designed with the cooperation of Tekonsha's engineers. I am not familiar with the other truck brands and their integrated systems.

I pull a 12,000 lb 5th wheel RV trailer as well as stock and equipment trailers, so there is a huge difference in total trailer weights. The P3 adjusts quickly for these differences.

I am a fan of the old tekonsha voyager. I have the newer model on my truck now but for simplicity, I prefer the voyager.

Aaron, agree completely on the Voyagers. Have run them on 3 trucks for quite awhile, absolutely no problems, simple to "tweak". Very good product.
