Got my coupon - but there is a problem.

Got two coupons in the mail from Lowes. One for $10 off on a $50 purchase (that's 20%) and one for $25 off on a $250 purchase (that's only 10%).

The problem is, I don't need anything right now. I'll go look, but can't think of anything there that I want to spend $50 on. Expires May 2nd.

Well, coupons ARE working!

If you spend 50 bucks...ya save 10 bucks....BUT if ya don't spend nothing....ya save 50 bucks.

Uhhhh...and gas money.

Trust me on this one because I used to work for Lowe's. Lowe's will accept an expired Lowe's coupon as much as 1 year old with just a very few exceptions. Do not accept a deniel from the cashier. Ask to speak to the manager-on-duty not a head cashier or department manger. If this fails then ask for a corporate phone number and begin dialing on your cell phone. I'll bet that you won't get the third number pushed on the dialpad before they are adjusting the price.

That is their way of baiting you into the store to spend $50. Otherwise, not needing anything, you might not come to the store. And, since they want the business in a relatively short time, they put a short expiration date on the coupon to get you into the store sooner than later. You are about to become a victim of psychology the minute you enter the store.

Ahhhh yes, The wife comes home from shopping with several bags from local department stores. Wow says her husband how much money did you spend? Wifey says I saved 75$!! Yes dear, But how much did it cost us to save 75$. I have to add, my wife is more frugal and cost conscience than I she always gets more bang for her buck. But sometimes it costs to save. gobble

Be careful Dick - I can drop a hundred bucks there, altho I escaped yesterday with only $20 leaving my jeans. Good thing I was in a hurry. . .

Dick,
Just send the coupons to me. Problem solved. :)

Skip,
I had a problem on a special order that I couldn't get resolved. I could never get past the assistant managers. I went to Lowes website and found an email address for the district or regional manager. Sent off my email. THREE minutes later the phone rang. It was the store manager wanting to know what he could do to fix the problem!

A few years back I got a card that was good for a nice discount on paint. It too had a short expiration date. I used it for nearly a year after it was expired.

When I was at a Lowe's one time last year I didn't have any of those coupons, which I had been using as much as possible, so I asked if there was any discount they could give me. The checker went through a few things that didn't apply before she came to whether I was a veteran. That would have been worth a 10% discount if I'd had proof with me (a requirement which struck me as reasonable). I found the credit card sized copy of my DD-214. I think that's its designation---the print on it is literally so small that it takes a magnifying glass to read it. I've used it to get a 10% discount every time I've shopped at Lowe's since then---five or six times. I served for two years, 1968 to 1970, so the requirement isn't that you have to be retired military.

I can send you a list, and you can save money, and then just ship the stuff to me,and I ll save a lot :)

Hello Stan in OLY, Wa,

Home depot offer the same 10% discount as well. I served 67 to 69. I went to the county clerk and I got a military picture I.D. card. Many places will honor it for some kind of discount.... BUT you got to ask!,

Guido.

"I do not need anything now".......ain't it amazing.... a cart full of stuff trying to meet the $50.00 minimum. Still doesn't add up at the cashier.

All of a sudden, your lady can find all sorts of flowers........ total bill $100.00. 20% off. of flower bill........$30.00 more than YOU though you needed.

My wife used to come home and cheerfully tell me how much she had saved shopping. Then one day she got home and I told her that I had saved $2,000 that day. She hasn't done it since.

Hi showcrop,

"Then one day she got home and I told her that I had saved $2,000 that day," isn't self explanatory. I get the gist of it, I think, but I can imagine many different circumstances that would give you the opportunity to say that. If I said that to my wife after she told me how much she had saved, her response would be, "Yeah, how?" If I said by not shopping, she'd ask me if I was being a smarta$$, or just trying to start a fight. I can't even imagine how she'd respond if I had actually bought something so expensive that I could truthfully state that I'd purchased it for $2,000 less than somebody else said it should cost. Neither of us would make a purchase of that size without consulting the other first. And neither of us would find it easy to swallow if the other one did.

I had a manager just walking around the store hand me a coupon if I recall worth $50 off on a minimum of $250.Fortunately I was remodeling a room so finding $250 worth of stuff wasn't a problem. I get lucky once in a while.

Home Depot changed their policy. The 10% military discount now only applies to the first $200.

As recently as last summer, we bought $5,000 worth of carpet at HD and got 10% off the entire amount, or a $500 discount.

No more. A couple of months ago, I bought about $500 worth of stuff and, like I said above, they only gave the discount on $200, or I got $20 off the total.

When the wife goes off the deep end shopping, her usual response is to tell me what she saved. I tell her I saved 250 at depot, just by not going there in the first place.

I just now came back from our regional hardware & building materials supplier.

I had previously received a promo coupon for "No Sales Tax" on weekends through 3/30/14. Here in the People's Republic of California" that is over 8%.

On my way in to the store, I stopped at the desk and asked if the coupon was single use. The answer was yes, a single use for any non-sale items purchased on a single invoice.

I told her I was going to purchase several items, needing up to three invoices for individual projects, but that I would just use the coupon for the most expensive invoice.

The woman asked how long I would be in the store. I said probably 30 to 45 minutes.

She said she got off work in about 15 minutes and would get me some more coupons out of her car. She added that she got the coupons through a promotion with a local supermarket (same as where I got mine), but as an employee of the hardware store was not able to use them.

Sure enough, when I went past the front desk, the replacement clerk flagged me down and gave me two more coupons.

Bottom line: There are still some caring, helpful folks out there!!!

Hello goose,

I bought an air compressor last year and the not only I got a $50 off, floor model, but the took 10% off after the $50 discount. I don't know if they changed the policy now?

Guido.

The Home Depot and Lowes are not universal in their policies:

Some say only retired from or on active service receives discount.

I inquired at other stores and they are willing to give me a service related discount. I served 4 years.

You can be sure which I buy from.

Went to Lowes this morning; didn't take long to pick out $56 worth of hardware that my nephew will probably use in a short period of time. Well, that's what it's for - better than laying in a bin unused. Eye bolts, eye lag bolts, lag bolts, 3 bags of stainless steel hose clamps of various sizes, etc.

I try to go to Lowes or HD by myself. When I stop with the wife to pick up "one thing", she'll grab a cart when we walk into the store. I say "I'm just here to get......". She smiles and says ok. I move as fast as I can, don't do any browsing but she STILL manages to have a bunch of stuff in the cart when I go to find her. I've tried saying "just wait in the car", but that doesn't work. Oh well, to paraphrase an old saying: "If momma's happy, I'm happy." :D
