Brush Grubber Question

We've got several fields that have been unused for a few years that now have some honeysuckle bushes and other brush growing up.

My Dad has suggested using a brush grubber on the back of the tractor to get rid of it. I might be wrong about the name, it's been a while since I looked up the info about them. It's a 3-point mounted, horizontal blade that appears to get pulled below the soil surface to cut the roots and remove the brush.

We are in Wisconsin, and it appears that brush grubbers are used more in the south. Anyone used a grubber and could speak to soil type requirements, etc.? We don't have heavy soil that would be too much of an issue (hopefully).

Brush grubber is a brand name and they have a multitude of products for pulling trees, shrubs and brush out of the group.

Below are two types. The 3PH implement you are referring to sounds like a Subsoiler. It is the third image above.

Grabbers can work for woody brush but will not effectively remove honeysuckle.

You will need to mow regularly or spray.

What my Father used to do was run over the brush real well with a brush cutter (Bush Hog) and then he had an two-gang offset disc. It was only about 7 feet wide but required 60 hp to pull it, big cut-away coulters and lots of weight on it. Then plant barley!

I've seen pictures of what you're talking about. Sort of a super heavy duty cultivator sweep that cuts an inch or so below ground level. I've never seen one for sale and the ones I did see were in old books from the 40's and 50's before 2,4,D and the other chemicals came on the scene.

A friend and I found the best way to work for us. Bush hog it down. Then when it grows back up to a couple of feet use a wiper applicator to apply something like crossbow. That will kill 99% of the brush. Then apply atrazine to kill the weeds. seed in the fall and in the spring you have a nice pasture.
The wiper will also kill out ironweed! Just wipe it after it gets tall but before it seeds.
