They are the cheapest accurate rifle you can buy for the money. I bought one in .223 to ride the tractor with me.

Upside, The first 5 shots out of it could be covered by a nickel at 125 yards. At $250 I won't cry too bad if I run it over. I like detachable magazines.

The trigger is pretty stiff, about 5#. No iron sights. The magazine is hard to load. It is ugly, and lacks any sort of style.

Never been a fan of that round. To small and light to have much down range for a bigger animal but for a tractor varmint gun might be ok

Take the gun to a good gun smith who works on competion guns. 45 ACP, AR 15, M1, etc. Have him stone the trigger to around 4 pounds of pull. I modified my own Savage Valmet 223/20ga over under down to a little more than 2 pounds of pull. I have the special tools and lapping compounds to do it. It breaks SOOOO Smooooth. No barrel movement at all. Look into it. Worth every penny if done correctly. Also NEVER oil the contact sear and trigger. They are ment to be dry! Jeffcat

Good gun I have one in a 22-250. You should look at the new American Ruger. It is probably a better rifle for about the same money. I just bought a compact 243 for my daughter very nice gun.

We use the 223 for Prairie dogs here. Shoot perhaps 500 rounds in a day. We use expensive rifles, Ruger #1HB, Remington Custom 700BDL HB and Kimber America. All have custom worked 2.5 lb triggers, 10 or 12 fixed power Leupold AO scopes. We average about 75% kills shooting out to 500 yards.
The 22-250 is a little deadlier, downside is recoil, heat in barrel, cost of ammo. Those 13 lb 223's are like shooting an air rifle. Sometimes you gotta buy ammo for the cases.
I don't know we can cover 5 shots with a nickel at 125 yards though. Maybe indoors LOL

I have a Savage .223 with the acu-stock and acu-trigger, and while it is not fancy or have the polished smoothness of a fancier rifle it is extremely accurate. The detachable magazines will hold 5 cartridges, but only 4 is recommended to keep spring from flattening with time.

How does the Kimber compare with the Remington and Ruger? I have 223 Kimber of Clackamas,Oregon ( when Jack Warne owened Kimber). I have never shot another bolt action 223 to compare it to. The only other 223 that I have shot is a Ruger mini 14 and it comes no where close to the accuracy of theKimber bolt action.

If you are looking to buy a new one, the Savage Axis is now available with the accutrigger for something like $89 more. I have several older Savages .223, 22-250, .243. I have fitted them with Timmeny triggers. That $89 for an accutrigger is one heck of a deal in my opinion.

I forgot to say, I do not own a Savage Axis, but I have a lot of Savage rifles, and their accuracy is right up there with anyone in the price ballpark. I love my Savages.

I'd buy a Marlin X7 - same rifle as the older Savage 110 only with the Accu trigger for $320 at a good shop. A much better rifle for the money than the Axis.

I own 2 X7s - one in 243 the other in 308. Very good guns.

Savage (especially with the accu-trigger) will get you about the most accuracy for the least money you can spend. Savage's accu-trigger is the out-of-the box trigger assembly that forced the other companies to FINALLY, after about 30 years, start putting decent triggers back in their guns. Savage proved to the other companies that you can not only build a decent trigger, but a litigation proof trigger at the same time. Ron Coburn should be declared the Patron Saint of the firearms world for that one accomplishment alone.

Accutriggers are worth the money. I've got a savage 204 with it. Definitely my go to gun when a critter is in the field and I've got a cabinet full of them.

Agreed. The Marlin X7 (same as the older Savage 110 (fixed magazine)) comes with the Accutrigger although Marlin has its own name on it (Profire). A whole lot better rifle than the Axis.

I also like the Marlin XT 22 rifles better than the Savage Mark II - pretty much the same rifle except the Marlin XT has a much better magazine than the Mark II, and it also comes with the accutrigger (profire).

One of my friends had a custom SS barrel put on his Mini 14. Just the barrel is close to $300.00+ but it turned the gun into a tac driver. My competiton AR 15 with a kregger barrel will shoot dime size at 100 yards all day. That barrel is in the $350.oo+ range and is cryo stress relieved. You will need to find a gunsmith who does competition work. Well worth the money.

If you do go with the Savage Axis .223 Remington, just make very sure you don't shoot military 5.56 in it. The 5.56 chamber pressure is about 10,000psi higher than the .223 Remington(50,000 vs 60,000). Doing so can lead to disastrous results. .223 Rem in a rifle chambered for 5.56 ammo, OK. 5.56 in a rifle chambered for .223 Rem, not OK.

The Kimber is a later 2005 model. The Rem custom 700 BDL is the most accurate rifle I have ever owned or seen. With a sled and rest you can shoot 5 shots at 100 yards and they are all touching each other. Cover with a dime.
One time I shot the first three of a 5 string and it was a barely enlarged single hole Then I threw one 1/2 inch away and ruined that. Was on my way to a 1/4 inch group. Dead calm 0700 am down sun, Handloads fireformed cases.
As an aside I didn't know Remington had the capability to produce this level of rifle . The blueing od equal to or better than Weatherby MK IV German rifles, or Colt custom Royal blue Pythons.
Must have been a Monday rifle.
I had a Ruger 14 for exactly one day. I can throw stones better than that.

Your Kimber was not built while Jack Warner owened the company. Mine is a Warner built and they would replace barrel if it didn't put all shots in a 1" group (that was their policy on all rifles they built at that time) .

I have a second generation SS Mini-14 and after putting a mussel brake - front site combo on it will group in a 1 1/2" circle at 100 yards ( not a tack driver but works for me). I also found it shot better for me by adding a custom rubber 2" butt plate.
