Good day,
I have been burning firewood going on near 30 years. We have a good supply of wood. (8 acres of bush)we burn about 15 face cord a year.
I have always loved cutting wood, it's good exercise and relaxing.
But I just ordered a tractor trailer load of logs for $1900 works out to 50 face cord. all hard maple, beech, ash, and cherry. For me the hardest part is getting the wood from the bush because it's at the back of my property , and you have to rely on the weather to get to it.I have never bought firewood before now, but
It's worth it to me to have the logs brought right to the farm and I can cut split and pile at my leisure .
anyone else buy loads of logs?

I have a friend in need of wood and have some to spare, but even at that, tow it out, buck and load, then unload 20 miles to his place, split by hand. Its time consuming, I've loaded him out a few times, but theres more here for him. He's got 2 young daughters, wife kind of turned on him, costing him a fortune with the exit plan, so its nice to save some when you can. Same situation, hard to get to, short on time, vs just ordering a load of logs, $100/cord, no travel, cut split and stack, seems like a no brainer.

I have access to 60 or so acres of woodland, and beyond with permission. Doing some logging here even on the worst slopes so far has not been too bad, though the back side you need a winch, skidder or something, steep one. For the most part, in a few days I can gather a seasons supply and then some. I think the place has enough to supply heat for a very long time, but if it was not I would do the same, get loads of logs, go for a processor and sell the excess off, try and max out on wood heat efficiency burn as less wood as possible, seems logs are always available.

Sometimes.... Ash is $65 per full cord (128 cubic feet), hardwood (oak, maple, birch) is $75 per full cord. This is delivered in 5 cord loads.

Yup, one 8 cord load every year. I don't have a woodlot, and NOBODY deals in 4 foot (pulpwood length) hardwood around here anymore.

Once I made a few changes in the way I go about things, it's actually easier to deal with tree length than the 4 foot stuff anyway, and it's a bit cheaper @ $120 per full cord delivered.

We burn 10-12 cord a year and for the first time I bought a 5 axle grapple truck load this past fall. Supposed to be 8 full cord, I dont think it is far off. Mixed hardwoods, larger than 8" smaller than 22" Cost for the wood was $400 and $125 for the delivery. Amish loggers were clear cutting just a few miles away. I think I would burn up half of that $525 for fuel chasing 8 cords of free wood. I have enough woods to supply about half of my needs and the rest must be located, usually the brother in law 5 miles away. Between what dies, gets blown down and trimming fence rows we usually cut half of our needs by hand but we also have a home built processor to catch up in a hurry if we need to.

I burn a lot of wood too....like 6 full cord this year so far.....and have thought about getting a load of logs in.....but at $100/cord for logs...I can just about buy split wood for that...

Around here you buy it in 10 cord loads (4x4X8') and it runs anywhere from 65 to 90 a cord delivered. There is a place that you can buy 10 face cords cut and split for 585.00 a truck load. I bought from him last fall and it is all hardwood.

I don"t own but 2 acres anymore, and given my age and income doubt I ever will own any more than this so I follow Asplundh and the others clearing right of ways. usually get plenty. used to get cull logs from loggers and mills cheap. Now they send everything to the chipper and that has dried up. I would gladly buy a load of cull logs, if they were still available

I get wood dumped here all the time. Can't keep up with cutting and burning that never mind cleaning up our own woods. I need to get my conveyor going again and borrow a saw table. Chainsaw is just too slow for small stuff.

Did this year. Bought an 8 full cord load of 8 foot stuff for $720.00 delivered. I can go out back and run a couple tanks of gas through the saw in an evening and get quite a bit cut up. No travel time hauling, no truck gas, and lots less time involved. Depending on availability of any free stuff next year, I might do the same thing.

M Nut,
Those prices for cut , split and delivered firewood is phenomenal! Believe me, If I could buy it for that you wouldn't see me bustin' my a$$ cuttin' my own!!
Here in upper NY State, seasoned hardwood, split goes for $200 to $225 a full cord altho I'm sure it could be gotten for somewhat less in 5 cord lots.
I would imagine as fuel oil and LP gas prices rise, you will be seeing the price of firewood also increase.

Sorry for the confusion.....those prices are for 8ft lengths. If you want it cut, split, and delivered, $150 for the ash and $200 for the hardwood.

Sounds like you need a better chain. Do you use square shoulder full chisel? VERY mean and aggressive cutting chain. When I cut fire wood with some neighbors, I have two.. 4hp McCulloch 650 chainsaws. These babies are set up with 16" BOW bars. I can cut TWICE as fast as you can with a "Buck" type saw. These bars are like $135.oo each and you should have someone who knows their stuff show you how to use them correctly. When you cut with a buck bar the log is from your left to right in front of you. With a Bow saw you stand OVER the log and cut from top to bottom with the weight of the saw doing all of the cutting. All you do is pull the throttle. Down south in North and south Carolina they have boat loads of pulp wood tracks. They use almost nothing but bows. Fantastic cutters but you MUST get a little training! Jeffcat
