We bought a house on the coast of NC and it needs a water softener. we are on a 1/2 acre lot so not much land. water softeners need some where to dump the waste salt water but I do not have any good place to get rid of it. Does anyone have a good idea where I can dump it without digging a well for it? Thanks in advance.

A properly-adjusted demand softener won't waste much salt, so there's little harm in dumping it into the septic (assuming your pipes are plastic). That said, mine dumps into a dry well. The dry well only needs about 40 gallons of capacity.

Eastern NC soil is usually very sandy, so it shouldn't be a big deal to dig a shallow dry well, not like the clay we have to deal with here.

Our water softner discharge has been going into
the septic tank for 45 years. All of the trees,
that we planted 45 years ago, are doing well.

Buy a water softener that only regenerates on demand (if you don't have iron in the water). WaterBoss (like ours) only uses about 15 gallons to regenerate. Use a "dry well" or a "French Drain" in your yard for disposing of the salt water. You can find info online how to construct either one.

Some of the large tank type use 60 gallons to regenerate and some use up to 120 gallons, so be sure to select one with low water useage.

Cities prefer that users put the salt water into a dry well or French Drain rather than into the sewer system.

Same as others, ours just dumps into my lagoon, and no issue that I know of. Prior to that when I was on city water it just dumped into the city sewer. Our softener regenerates automatically based on usage, but I don't think it uses a great deal of water to regenerate. I would not be without a softener now, and they really help with water quality, but need to run a cleaner through them from time to time. I just use Iron Out. Instructions on cleaning is on the container.
