Parts Washer Solvent

Hi
Wonder what everyone is using as a solvent in your parts washer.
My brother gave me a 30 gal drum type parts washer that he no longer uses.
Need to clean up and refill with at least 10 gallons.
Thanks

I have a small parts washer,I get a couple of gallons of diesel fuel, a jug of mineral spirits and a quart of ATF so its not too harsh on your hands, meld all three together and am good to go. It does evapourate so I always close the lid on it to make it last longer

use solvent intended for a parts washer, I put paint thinner in my Gray Mills years ago, never again, at the advice of others I added some atf to tame it down, that and with the oil from used pats at least a person can tolerate it now

I've used mineral spirits, for over 40 years.
When it gets too dirty to use, I dump it in a 5
gallon pail, clean the tank, and refill with new
mineral spirits. The old, used, stuff goes to
our county hazardus waste drop off, at no charge.

Mineral spirits on Varsol works best. Be careful of using fuel oils or diesel as a cleaner. They have a different flash point and you don't want to much of a fire hazard, not to mention fumes. Be safe whatever you use, Joe.

Put water in the bottom of the barrel and have the suction higher up in the solvent. The solvent will float on top of the water and all the sediment will fall to the bottom. Saves a lot on solvent too.

I use mineral spirits parts solvent (similar to Stoddard). Farm and Fleet has it for around $40 for 5 gal. As said, use water in the bottom to filter the solvent. Return pipe below water level and pump intake higher in the solvent. The other thing I do is put a plastic liner in the drum. It makes cleaning way easier. I get liners designed for parts washers at auto parts store. Mine is built on a 30 gal drum and I use about 7 gal of water and 15 gal of solvent. Don't know how I got along without it for so long.
