electric wood splitter

Anything you split with an electric splitter can be split with a maul in 1/4 the time or less. I do think they are handy for people with rotator cuff injuries, though, or other difficulties that make it not feasible to swing the maul.

If you built your own and had a 5 hp motor on it, plugged into a 220V outlet it would work great. Anything that plugs into a 110v 20 receptacle is going to be pretty disappointing!

I have a 5t Speeco in basement next to wood furnace That is a great to have, use it daily to get fire started, large blacks smaller etc.

That being said it would never replace my gas splitter. Depending on type of wood it would be ideal for wood shed. It splits all the types of wood I burn.

I don't know about the cheapo ones sold at TSC. But I do have a 20 ton electric splitter that I like. Splits about as fast as a gas model, and I can walk out in the coldest weather and split a few pieces without worrying about it not starting. My wood pile is next to the shed with 220V available so that's not a big deal. I don't think it's any quieter than a gas model however.

1972,1st splitter I ever saw was LIKITY LOG-SPLITTER 220 electric 20 ton with a guage , I worked 6 hours every nite all winter long ,. there was nuthion that thing would not split OR SHEARE THRU orhery beach , knarley chestnut and elm , stubborn forked sycamore ,, it would whittle them all down faster than 4 guys could keep movin ,,we would easily split, stack ,load 20 rick per nite ,,

Depends on what you mean by "electric wood splitter."

There are two types:

1. Electric hydraulic. Basically the same as a gas splitter, except with an electric motor in place of an engine.

2. Electric mechanical. Uses a screw to move the wedge through the wood. These are the el-cheapo ones you see at TSC and HF.

I have a 5 ton Speeco.I bought it when my son bought a load of tree length wood that had some big stuff in the load. You cant expect it to do the work of a 25 ton gas job.I have split wood with an axe, mauls and wedges and a sledge hammer.I have about 60 years in cutting and splitting wood.My son said the little Speeco split most of the wood he put thru it.I still split white ash with a maul but the other wood goes to the Speeco.I can put the Speeco on the tailgate of my truck and split the rounds as they are unloaded.I dont go nuts splitting wood because I know that split wood burns faster.Wood loses moisture from the ends so splitting wont make it dry faster. My cook stove needs smaller wood than the big stove in the living room.I have seen the 5 ton Speeco sell for 200 bucks on sale. You can do damage to your shoulder when a hard chuck doesnt split. You may be the bull of the woods at 21 but 76 will be different.Been there ,done that.In short dont mean mouth the little splitters, they work fine.
