Tracdtor Parts and Ammunition

Talking to a man about used tractor parts and got to talking about hunting. He says he has a large supply of 270 Rifle ammunition. On the box, it says Winchester 270, 150 grain. Price is very reasonable. Would this work in our 270 Remington Rifle? I don't know a lot about ammunition, but thought you guys would. Old??
I know you post about re-loading. Should I buy some?

I guess I should read the post first. Anyone who can't spell TRACTOR is probably suffering from CRS Disease. Sorry about that. I got a new keyboard and it is smaller than the old one. My size 14 fingers sure can't spell.

Yes, it should. As far as I know, there's only one version of the .270 round (other than various bullet styles and weights) and it should work fine in any rifle chambered for .270

Thanks for the response. I was hoping it would be like regular .22 Cal. ammo,(one size fits all) but with my limited experience, just wasn't sure.

Shouldn't be a problem. I use Winchester 130 or 150 grain ammo all the time in my Remington .270.

Like someone else said, there's really only one version of the .270 round, unlike some other calibers.

There is also the 270 WSM, and the 270 Weatherby. I don't know of Winchester making the Weatherby round, but they designed/produced the WSM.

You can use the 150 gr loads in your 270, but ballistics will be poor at longer ranges. The 270 shoots the 130 gr loads much better. If you get them, make sure you sight in your rifle with the heavier 150 gr loads. Tom

I feel your pain our computer dumped 2 weeks ago, had to have new tower and keyboard. Of course the old key board wouldn"t fit the new tower, so struggling the same here.
This ones gonna get educated with a fence post and a night out in the cold, if it don"t soon wise up.
Hopefully on the bright side your not dealing with a soft ware change also. Went from Vista to windows 8.
who ever decided that was an improvement needs some of those rounds whistled over there head!
Regards Robert

Speaking of key boards, I have a ergonomic one from Microsoft and I love it . I can hardly even type on a regular flat one anymore. Took a little to get used to but the wrists love it also. Good friends with my former typing teacher from early fifties and that was one class I make good use of now days.

if the gun is chambered for .270 and that is what the box and head stamp says. it's good.

if it's a different projectile weight than you are sighted in for.. simply resite for the new ammo.

Thanks Gentlemen for all of your responses. I will probably take a few boxes for future target practice. In all fairness, I am not much of a hunter, just like to spend a few rounds for practice.

Well with rifle rounds a 270 is pretty much a 270 no matter who makes it. Now if it is reloaded ammo then you can have the factor of did the person reload it correctly as in uses a scale not a powder dipper as a measure to fill the cases. Seen way to many reload ammo but not use a scale and that is not a good way to do things

The round's name is probably 270 Win. It doesn't matter who makes the gun or ammo. It should be stamped on the barrel of the gun also stamped on the base of the ammo and should match.

Buy all of them. Ammunition is the new Microsoft of the investment world. The shortages will not go away. Now lead has to be smelted in China. Have you ever picked up a shoebox full of lead?
As to the .270 Weatherby ad ,270 WSM I had them from 1963 to current. The WBY tipped deer on their back. The .270 WSM was dead accurate to 450 yards but would half kill the deer and you had to track it. And that was with the best Nosler rounds.

Depends. If you have an older 270 rifle its most likely chambered in 270 Winchester and that ammunition will work.

Your rifle could be chambered in 270 WSM (Winchester Short Magnum) if it was made after 2002.

I don't believe you can chamber either round in the wrong gun. The 270 Winchester is too long to fit in a 270 WSM and the 270 WSM is too "fat" to fit in the chamber of a 270 Winchester.

Ah but see now you add words which makes a 2 different things all together. Sort of like the 44 special and the 44mag 2 different rounds same caliber and both say different things so that is an apple and orange thing

Agreed. Saying a 44 is a 44 no matter who makes it is wrong too. Leaving the words off doesn't make it right.

In this case the guy isn't sure if the 270 rounds will fit his rifle - he needs to know that there are at least two different 270s on the market right now and that they are not interchangeable.

Ah but again most guns state right on the thing what is it. If it was a 270 W or a 270 sm it should say so right on the gun. And since we do not have that weapon in our hands we can not do much more then what we have

I'd get it. Any 270 round will work as long as it's not the WSM ammo. It wouldn't chamber anyway. Anyway pick it up. Ammo wont go bad anytime soon.

I'm shooting a Turkish Mauser with ammunition stamped 1943 - all it did was get hotter. Its only fair though - the rifle was built in 1936.

Keep it dry and it will last decades.
