Anyone have a remedy (tool) for splitting cracking skin by your finger nails. Mine have always done this, but the cold weather really makes it worse. II've tried super glue and all kinds of lotins. What are your experiences and cures. thanks gobble

I have been having the same problems and tried some O'Keeffe's Working hands hand cream and so far it sure seem to be helping. Most of the smaller cracks are going away and the bigger ones are getting smaller

I have used Vaseline, Vitamin E salve, Udder Balm and others. Brothers hands used to get so bad he would lather them in vaseline and put on a pair of cotton gloves and wear them to bed.
I am thinking you work outside a lot? Mine have been better since I stopped milking cows.

Suffered the same problem for years. There were days skin was so dry I could make a fist and my knuckles would crack and start to bleed.
Installed a water softener several years ago and the problem is gone 100 percent gone.

Same miserable finger skin cracking for a long time, predominantly in winter months. Have used heated Vick's VapoRub "slathered on" and latex gloves overnight; the gloves also force hands to sweat, thereby providing more moisture and opening pores for better Vick's penetration. Works better than the numerous other things I've tried over the years. Good luck.

As tomturkey sez, bag balm (udder ointment). Am told by my local hardware store that they sell far more of it than the amount of local cows would account for.. Also have had some success with super glue. Lasts a couple days, and either healed or needs another application. Have SG on my thumb right now.

I use olive oil to solve that dry hand problem. I have cracks on the ends of my middle fingers. What a PITA. Especially when you bump your finger and it feels like getting poked with a needle.
I have actually cut the scab portion out to allow it to regrow. Doesn't always work though.

Have used the O'Keefes working hands for over two years now . works really well for me. have used about all of the home remedies heard on here. This Products seems To Work really well.

I use Udderly Smooth cream. It comes in a white container with black Holstein spots on it. Available at most stores in our area. Works good if used regularly. If I do get an open crack, I use a triple antibiotic ointment and keep wrapped for several days. Usually does the trick.

Two suggestions:
1. Wear latex (vinyl, etc.) gloves when working around oil, grease. They dry your skin and the cleaners you use to remove them dry even more.

2. Apply "Atrac-Tain Cream moisturizer" (expensive and found only in pharmacies, but works like nothing else I've tried). Next best: Amlactin lotion(also found in pharmacies)

These are go-to's for nurses/docs who wash their hands many times a day (wife is a nurse).

best I found is "Avon moisture therapy intensive healing & repair" put it on at night still there in the morning. Have tried most others listed here.

Have to agree with you. I have tried the Vitamin E and bag balm and skin so soft etc etc and nothing worked till I tried the working hands stuff and boy even though I have only used it a few days seem to be working well

I have always liked the Cornhusker's because you can rub it in and in just a few minutes you can pick something up. It is not greasy or oily. In addition I try to keep a band-aid with triple antibiotic cream on it. It will heal 20% faster.

Prevex or Eucerin lotion. Both of these are hand protectant lotions, not just moisturizers-they are designed to stay on even when hands get wet. I find nothing works as well, and I have tried them all. They are available at pharmacies, are not cheap, but you need very little to do the job.

Another vote for "O"Keeffe"s Working Hands". Does a great job for my hands and only takes a few days.

Steroidal cream/ointment

cream gets in faster and ointment lasts longer
Rx only

stay out of the shampoo and dawnlike detergents

your feet are just as bad but covered most of thetime

exfoliating soaps, sanding the tips to keep the callouses down so that when it cracks you don't peel back 1/8" of flesh thinking it's just scab standing proud

I have sensitivities
this is wisdom

Got my first split of the season on my right thumb today. band-aid with triple antibiotic cream is all I do. I will ware a pair of work gloves for a few days when I can.

Maybe 50 years ago I used Farm Hand. For me it worked better than anything else, it came in a squize tube. It had Eucalypus Oil in it. Then Eucalypus Oil was taken off the market. Something about it being used in baby soap and a baby being burned with it. Somebody put it on their baby and the phone rang.

tools required, one piece of a rubber band and some superglue. glue rubber band to one side of crack and let dry. place second drop of glue on other side of crack, slightly stretch the rubber band over crack and make contact with glue and hold until dry. let go and trim rubber band as required. you should feel instant relief. good luck.

I have had that problem for years and have tried many things.
The best thing I have found is to apply Neosporin Cream, at bedtime, and apply a Band-Aid.
Usually next day it is much better or healed up a bit.

Jiles, you make three of us with the triple antibiotic.

Working hands. Have used it for 2 years every night. No cracks after the 1st few months. You need to use it every night not just when you get a crack. Had them all the time before I started to use it.
