carb cleaner

Is there a good carb cleaner, the kind you soak the body and parts in, that the EPA hasn't banned yet?

They are all about the same , but I will tell you something , We have Dollar general stores here you can get the stuff for like $3.50 a can, Over $4.00 at the auto parts store....Check it out

Gordo,

I made my own 'mini hot tank'. I went to the thrift store and bought an old crock pot for $4.50. Filled it with nearly full strength Greased Lightning.

The only size crock pot they had is just big enough to hold a disassembled 'B Allis Chalmers' carb. I let it simmer overnight and then gave it a water rinse and blew every orifice out with compressed air. It was a real cruddy carb and cleaned up well. The heat makes all of the difference. Someone on here said that they used a strong mix of Dawn dish soap in a crock pot also with good results.

I just did the cast iron housings and cleaned the jets, float etc with spray carb cleaner. Greased Lightning does not seem as stout as it used to be. Thats why I hardly diluted it, maybe 1/10th to 1/8th water.

I always used Berrymans .Its been a long time since I have bought any , don t know but they might have either diluted it or may not be able to buy it anymore .
I do like the Berrymans spray better than the other brands.

Why would you put that in there? Same with car carbs. You don't put the soft parts like the accelerator pump in.

NAPA has a gallon paint can with carb cleaner in it and a basket for small parts. It can be closed while soaking so it does not evaporate.

Berrymans, I buy it at OReileys and Wal Mart. It is less than $20.00. Keep the lid on it and it will last a long time.

(quoted from post at 08:47:40 11/28/13) How's that gonna work with the rubber/viton tipped needle? LOL

E85 will NOT damage the viton tipped float valve. I've got a 1940 Farmall H that has been running on E85 for about 3 years now.

Chemtool B-12. It's got all the nasty chemicals that Gumout used to have.
I also use Water-Seal carb cleaner when I have to soak one. I keep a gallon only for carbs or fairly clean parts. It has some water that floats on top to keep the fumes down but if you get some on your hands the smell is on for about five days.

I have and use this same stuff, seems to work pretty well. I recommend nitrile gloves as you do not want to get this stuff on your hands.
Someone over on the Ferguson forum has said they use toilet bowl cleaner with great results. Not for use with aluminum or rubber/plastic parts though. I've seen pictures and I would try it. Once I'm done with my can from Napa that is.

(quoted from post at 17:09:35 11/29/13) Gunk sells a decent carb cleaner by the gallon or 5 gallon. Available at most auto parts stores.

Gunk is probably about as good as it gets, but even that stuff has been watered down considerably when compared to what it was 20 to 30 years ago. I can remember using that stuff when it was powerful enough that great caution was needed to NOT get it on your skin because it WOULD burn you, and believe me, it WOULD burn you.

This stuff you can get today is mild enough, and weak enough that you actually immerse your fingers in it, and nothing will happen.

That was me that uses toilet bowl cleaner Inno...lol. Best thing in the world for old cast iron carbs, brass, etc, but no aluminum because it will cook it because of the chemical reaction.

Sorry Jason, I thought it might have been you but didn't want to say it unless I was wrong. I'll remember next time.

You have to watch the Dollar General, Family Dollar, etc. stores. They often get items packaged for them to sell and the price / qty. is often higher than other places. Just because the can looks the same size doesn't mean it has the same amount of stuff in it.
