Walnut tops, how long will they last?

A little off topic but pretty smart bunch here.
We just sold 40 black Walnuts for lumber and veneer and of course have all the tops. We burn a good bit of wood but are already 3 years ahead. How long will the Black Walnut tops stay fit for firewood? I would let some people cut before letting it go to waste.

The bark will rot quickly but Walnut wood will last a long time even if its on the ground.I've cut up trees that had been on the ground for over 5 years and the wood was solid and made good firewood.

I'll agree with traditional farmer. When the bark has all fallen off the smaller stuff will then be ready to burn. The large stuff if split will still give off a pungent smell and not burn well until it has seasoned some. It is very good wood. Cut it up and stack it, it will be ready in four years. When you need it. jmho gobble

Walnut is an excellent exterior wood due to its rot resistance. This, like all rot resistant woods, is restricted to the heartwood. Sapwood won"t last long.

I"ve cut standing dead walnut in my woodlot that died so long ago I didn"t know what it was until I saw the color of the saw chips. Still sound many years later.

I never bother to have firewood cut more than a year in advance, give away all the rest. Apparently like you, no shortage here and we don"t need much.

I would guess that you have a lot of smaller logs that are good, just not what the buyer wanted. Save them out for saw logs, that lumber will sell good. If nothing else with them take to a local show with a saw mill and let them have them for display and if you do not need the lumber let them sell it for income to operate the show. Sounds like you will have enough firewood that you would not miss it.

Believe me Walnut has enough value and is in such demand that they didn"t leave any logs laying around suitable for sawing, unless your running a 1/4 scale mill.

Dang Dusty, I got so worked up about that I went
out and cut some up and threw it in the stove last
night and then got all cleaned up and waited to get
attacked!,,,,,and I woke up this morning and went
to work,,,,,

I know for vener they want only the parts without knots and usually they will not take anything less than 8' in length and a foot in diameter. A 4' log will fit on most mills and even if it is only 6" in diameter it will demonstrate the procedure and that size material would be in demand from home woodworkers.

Wood I cut last year and left in the woods was not dry.Get is cut to stove size and under cover as soon as possible. Why not sell some if you have plenty on hand.Green stove wood costs 210.00 a cord here.
