capacitor size question

My neighbor called and had a capacitor on the drying
fan on his bin go bad. There are 3 caps the same
size but are rusted too much to see all the numbers
the motor is a single phase 10 HP 1700 rpm. The
numbers on the cap that I can read are 102912-30 and
Aerovox2166f110 and 440 vac and ?0uf and 7414AH. As
you can see the missing digit of the microfarad
really is a problem. Is there any way of finding the
right one? I could send a good one to the store
tomorrow and have them put a meter on it. I tried at
two different places and they both said they
couldn't help with this info.

Had a similar thing this fall on my automatic batch dryer which I hadn"t used in five years....two Baldor motors were down...wrote down all the nameplate info on the motor, took it to my motor shop guy, and he referenced his books to find the right ones. You could do that over the phone.

Yeah, actually I tried that later this afternoon and they said there wasn't enough info. I guess some if them have a cap # on the nameplate. This is a Gould brand motor if that makes any difference.

I'd google Gould, assuming you have the motor model numbers, etc. They can probably help. Maybe even be able to tell you a lot based on the info you now have.

(quoted from post at 04:31:15 11/26/13) "They" are likely parts counter persons with minimal knowledge of electrical theory.
theory" my a$$......only need to be able to read catalogs cross reference section.........just like an electrician only need to follow blueprints.......no "theory" needed. That was the engineer's /blueprint maker's job!

Not to brag but by knowing theory and instead of blindly following a engineer who knows little about the real world. I have stopped several disasters before they started.

Uhhh...huh! And if so, why don't you have his better job?!!!

not all engineers are out of touch with their end work.

as with anything.. some are.. some aren't.

some fast food people don't wash their hands after leaving the rest room.. etc.

every profession will have it's slackers and shut-ins from broom pusher to the oval office. speaking of oval office slacker... :)

There are single phase motor start winding phase shift capacitors. And run winding power factor correction capacitors. We are not tuning an RF circuit for a radio receiver here.
The more mfd on the start circuit, the more starting torque there will be.
The higher mfd on the run windings the higher the PF, the less I2R line loss, lower line currents and higher terminal voltage at the motor.
