OT: A Comp bow is a tool. Can I restring it at home?

OK. I got a Browning youth compound bow for Junior to try. I've never hunted with a bow. He tried and doesn't have the interest or the patience. In the mean time he torqued it a little side ways and the string cam off the cams but it didn't fully come off. Being a mechanic I was hoping I could put it back on. I just want to sell it. I don't see any frayed spots. Anyone put one back on?

The compound bows can get pretty difficult if you try to restring without the proper equipment. My suggestion, take it to a sporting shop where they have a bow press. They can probably restring it in just a few minutes, make proper adjustments. If you try without a bow press and something slips, someone"s going to get hurt. My take on it - others may have other views. I am a certified 4-H shooting sports leader.

Restring it or just put the existing cable back on in the proper place? There is a difference.

You shouldnt have much trouble just putting the existing cable back on but you do have to be careful to make sure its in time when you are done. If the cam is not in the exact same place as before (in relation to the string) then the timing will be off. What the means is, when you draw the bow back, either the upper or lower limb will be coming back sooner, causing the arrow to go higher or lower and when you shoot, it will mess up the flight of the arrow (very inaccurate). But you can easily put it back if you are sure you can keep it in time, google a bow press and with a little thought you can make one or you can ask around if anybody you know is in an archery club, most of them own a press. The key is, to check the bow after wards to make sure its in time.

For replacing a cable its much harder because you have to get the length right, usually after removing the cable, then you have to time it. Doing that usually goes out of the DIY for most people.

You DON"T wana get your fingers stuck under the string and a cam. Do not mess with something that can BITE ya.

I agree with RayP. Take it to a good sporting goods shop. Pay them $20 to put it their press and set it correctly. Way cheaper then someone getting hurt.

On a second note, where are you located? I am looking for a youth bow for my boy...

agreed.

Man, there's a lot of force at play there. I wouldn't mess with it without the right setup.

I remember standing next to my brother when he learned the hard way that dry firing a 75 pound pull bow was a stupid thing to do.

gave me a whole new level of respect for the things!
