Shopping for an (almost) 16 year old male family member. He is a good kid, as responsible as you'll find. He just took the plunge on his first set of wheels with mostly his own money.

Anyway, I decided to get him a set of jumper cables... not junk ones but something that will last. I found a set made by Grote, part number 84-9278. They are 2 guage 20 footers with parrot jaw clamps. Plaza Truck in Litchfield, IL. has them for $112.80 plus tax. If you guys think that is a good price, I'll pick them up in the morning for him. BONUS - they're made in the U.S.A.

I can t tell you the price, but mine are welding cable with heavy clamps. I have carried them for 20 years.(Welding store had it all in pieces)

Sounds like a lotta money but I ran through several sets at various prices from $4 to $20 before I made mine from welding cable about 20 years ago. I still have them. If it takes that kinda money to get them it is worth it. Best part they will WORK!

Sounds a little high to me. I made my own from some used welding leads and added heavy duty battery charger clamps from NAPA over twenty years ago that still work just fine.
I did have to replace one clamp two or three years ago.

Hello Eric in IL,

Why not buy him a jump box? They have: an air compressor, trouble light, ac outlets, and even a
USB port to charge a cell phone! Some of them even have a radio,

Guido.

I agree with Guido. You've got a jumper you can take anywhere (Lawnmower, car, tractor), an air compressor, 12v power source and a little light.....which can also be used indoors if you have a power failure.

And they only run about 50 bucks

Jumper cables, I have a set in each vehicle. I am currently on California taking care of a friends estate. Last week we drove down 5 from the Bay Area to Long Beach. Along the way we stopped at a rest area where a woman approached us asking if we had jumper cables. I said "yes" and almost said everyone should have a good set. I got her car started and another person came up and asked if I could help him start his car which we did. I recommend everyone get a very good set of jumper cables for every car.

That is well and good you have cables to come to others' aid. One bad experience and you may reconsider it though. I had to replace an alternator after jump starting someone's car one time. He had a problem to start with and I had left my vehicle running while starting the other car. It's not always just a discharged battery on the dead vehicle. Now I carry a booster pack like the others have suggested. That way I don't have to concern myself with potential issues that I would have no recourse should something go wrong.

I agree that the jump boxes are very handy - but I'd have to call them a good addition to a solid set of cables.

Cables are foolproof. With the boxes you have to be sure they're charged, and won't be much help if you've got something that's hard to start and requires a lot of hard cranking.

On the other hand either is a great gift.

Hello JRSutton,

It depends what you have to spend. Schumacher has one that is rated at 4400 watts. Model # PJS-4424.
For 12 or 24 volts systems......... only $449.99
