One Pull Starting

I have two Makita DCS520i chainsaws, along with several Stihl, Echo and Husqvarna.
I always go to one of the 520's because they start with ONE pull of the starter every time!
I have never had a small engine that would start like this.
It is partly because of the injection start feature of the carburetor.
I wonder why they don't still offer this?
 
My Stihl needs 3 or 4 pulls on a cold start.After that its one pull every time.The Makita is actully a Dolmar.
 
I too have a 520i. Almost 25 years. Made by Dolmar. Have cut prob 50 cords of wood with it. Love it. Always starts. Usually 2 pulls. One with choke out, push choke in and another yank.

As I have stated before, it is my opinion that Dolmar/Makita is undeservingly underrated. For me, they are just as good as Stihl or Husqvarna.
I think their lack of popularity is due to lack of available dealers.
I have a Stihl 200t--arguably the best and hottest small saw ever made. However, I also have a Makita DCS 401 that I like better. But they are different saws for different applications. The 401 just feels better to me and is better suited for ground bucking. Of course, if I am up in a tree, the 200t is better.
The 401 doesn't start any better then the other saws I have, but this discussion is about the 520i starting cold even after a long period of storage.
 
I had a stihl 034 for 20 years,..took 20 or so pulls before it fired, would not idle half the time and had to restart,..took another 5 or so pulls.
I never figured out why but I was glad it seized up solid one day.
I got a husky 55 for the last 5 or so years,.bought it cause it was garanteed to start within 3 pulls.
Guess what,..can't get that one to go either, takes at least 10 pulls. But it idles fine all day,...till you pick it and wanna use it then it dies.

It goes without saying, that people--along with saw--are different.
My older brother had difficulty starting his chainsaw, leaf blower and virtually every small engine.
Nearly all my small engines require a slight different starting procedure. Like my Echo 330, if I choke and pull until it fires, release choke, it will start after many pulls. I discovered that if I pull one time with choke, release choke and it will start on the second pull?? Most of my other saws will start on three to five pulls.
The greatest problem, with any chainsaw, is the carburetor. There needs to be a completely different designed carb but I have no idea how it could be made.
Even the tiniest grain of wood or dirt, will plug the small orifices and even with a perfectly tuned motor, it will run different with different brands of the Low quality gasoline we have today.
I only use ethanol free 91 or 93 octane gasoline with quality blended two cycle oil.

They now have B&S start on the first pull. Push the primer ONLY 3 rimes, and they start on the first pull. Old priming systems where just a bypass system. Once the carb cavity was full all the pumping you did retuned fuel to the tank. New primers put fuel in the carb, just as if you would squirt some in. That's why the usually start on the first or second pull. Some even without choke.

The only small engine i have that'll fire on the first pull even after sitting for months is a little honda 4 stroke weed eater, pump the primer bulb a couple times, close the choke and pull once.prrrr :wink:

I have a 7H.P. B&S snow thrower that starts on the first pull, just like I said in my post,

That's what the i represents in the 520i --it injects gas mix into the carb throat through a jet. No primer bulb.
