Return Detent on Log Splitter Valve

I have a Power Pro log splitter made by Brave Model HP-1226F. It's working but not correctly. The valve in the forward stroke position is fine. If I pull it back to retract the ram it used to go into a detent position and stay there until the ram was fully retracted and then the handle and valve would return to the neutral position. It now sticks if you put it into the detnet position and you must pull it forward into the neutral position. You can feel it stick in the rear position as you pull it forward, although it goes into the detent position smoothly. Any idea of what is wrong and can the valve be disassembled and repaired fairly easily? I might add that this log splitter does not get a lot of use. Maybe a few times in a year and then just sits around.
Thanks,
Bill

If it is a tractor-powered splitter, try reversing the hoses running to the tractor remote.

If you hook them up backwards, the detent will act as you describe.

Should have an adjuster screw to adjust the detent operation, loosen the jam nut and turn the adjuster screw CCW to decrease the detent pressure setting, might have to play with it a little to get the handle to release or engauge how you want. Gene

I had a similar problem on the open center single spool valve on my 28 ton Huskee. I took the valve apart, cleaned it thoroughly, there was some old grease, whatever else, and when you put it in return, the detent would not release like it should, would stick and almost stall the motor. This took care of it, I lubed it with white lithium grease, no trouble since. On this one, there is apparently a factory specification for the detent to release, there was more to it, as far as making an adjustment, something to be careful of. In my case I figured it was adjusted right per the mfr, just needed a good cleaning, condensation, old grease, a little rust, likely from the previous owner not leaving it under cover. Works flawlessly now.

Hello WSMM,

Most detent style valves have 2 adjustments. One is for cylinder pressure, the other for the detent pressure. You need to increase the detent pressure, then your stick will kick back to neutral. One turn IN should do the trick!

I haven't been able to locate any adjustments. I'll try to post a picture of the valve later.
