Need help with my sae 300

I would appriciate any help I can get. I bought a
lincoln welder sae300 with ah hercules motor model
qxld3. The reason i bought it is becuse i want to
get into the oil rig buisness. The motor is not
locked up. THe problem is i cant get it to start.
When starting i have to help the starter to spin and
it only had very little force. I cant afford a
rebuild kit and was wondering if i could actually
replace the motor with a ford flat head 6 cyl?? Ant
help would be greatly appreciated.

Good chance the starter is bad. Or maybe the engine has sat a long time and is very stiff. I would pull the plugs out and pour a table spoon or so of ATF in the cylinders, let it sit a few hour then try to spin it over with the plugs out and see if it then spins over well

I would pull the starter and take it to an auto parts store and have it checked. Most will do it for free in the hopes of selling you one if it is bad

I cant afford a motor rebuild kit at the moment its about 3000. I have taken my starter to get rebuild. Is this welder worth investing into it?

One time I had an onan generator something like yours. My starter was built into the back of the generator and everybody warned me when it burned out it would be expensive to rewind. Even when new it would not spin all that fast in start mode.
It was a Hercules motor and had a mounting place on the engine block for a regular starter. The flywheel had a ring gear on it. I took the cover off the hole where the starter would mount. But I can't remember which starter I used after a while I went back to using the starter it came with.
I would try Old's idea first. As I remember it did not start like a regular starter. It started turning slowly and sped up as it turned. Mine was 24 volt. I know it was overkill I used two 12 volt group 31 batteries connected in series.
If your starter is not on back of the generator, please disregard this post.
ps I was just thinking I had trouble starting it when I first got it. The Murphy switches were bypassed the first few starts. Reconnected after that and it worked fine.

An SAE 300 is a very good welder. Later models used a Continental engine. Get your starter checked out and try to see if you can get the original engine running. I'd guess there's an idler, governor and other stuff that might make an engine swap more involved than you think.

What do you mean, you want to get into the oil rig business? You don't just buy a welder and expect to get work on the rigs. Being a 6 cylinder gas engine, that welder will be thirsty if you plan on making a living with it.

I have been a welder for about 15yrs now. I did it many years in my time ofc service. Am tired of being home and would like to get back on the road. The military has helped me pay for al my certs and i finally want to put them to good use. I didnt get promoted in the service for my good looks but my mechanical and welding abilities. I just think its time to move away from iowa and head back to my home state of Texas

Why the heck would you have to rebuild the entire engine for just a bad starter???

Or you can set it on the ground and hook jumper cables to it. Step back and touch the other ends to a battery. IF it slowly comes up to speed it's bad. If it takes of rolling it's good. Hence stepping back and touching the cables to the battery, and not clamping them on.

That test does nothing more then tell you it spins up but does not tell you if it is drawing to many amps and if it draws to many amps it is bad
