error code on new vehicle

Ok here goes.
I have had the engine light (idiot light) on for the last month. I took it into the dealer and the code is Vapor canister/purge valve is bad.
Now the truck runs fine, gas mileage is okay too.
The dealer wants $380 to replace the 2 items listed above. The truck has 37,300 miles on it, just out of warranty too by the way.
I really do not care if the vapor canister is bad, it is really an emissions thing I guess.
Question---?
Would any of you pay to have this fixed? I know that I can get any mechanic to fix this for $100 less, the parts will be $200.

A lot of my customers pass on that repair. Typically though emissions stuff usually has longer warranty on it, surprised dealer didn't fudge the paper work and cover it.

does the code # point to these items as the exact cause, or just something in the system? most common is bad fuel cap seal, or just leaving it loose. also, don't keep cramming fuel in it at fillup. might clear code & try again

..fad the same thing happen with my GMC truck, same problem, its a less than twenty dollar part,BUT, the gas tank has to come off to replace it and that $ is just about all labour..I didn't change it and the truck still is going strong years later, the code can be taken off but will eventually reappear as a check engine light..

I had a couple dealers that would tell the customer that the company wouldn't cover it and charge the customer for parts and labor - and then submit a warranty claim and collect from the company too. It's called "Revenue Enhancing".

Have them check the warranty, emission system should be under warranty for 80,000 miles and if they dont agree, contact corporate or look up the number for warranty in your owners manual.

I have a Code reader also, had that to Happened on a 97 Toyota Trecel, It wouldn't Start, would Turn over but NO Start, I took of the gas cap, put it back on, Started right up!... Go figure.. IDK Larry KF4LKU

2011 Ford Escape,
37,300 miles.
Yep, 36,000 on the Warranty. (of course)
The truck does NOT have a gas cap it has a fuel filler door, but no screw in cap like we all know.
I think that the BS rubber seal flap does not do what it is supposed to.
I know of 2 other folks that have the same truck with a very similar error code, fuel filler inlet error is one of the faults.

Had similar code on my Chevy Blazer. Turns out there is a purge valve back behind the gas tank. Dropped the spare tire, Took it off (couple wires and a hose clamp, took it apart cleaned the dirt out of the filter, sprayed valve assembly with WD-40, to get the dirt out.. Dried it out, put it back together, and it is working fine. Replacements are available for several dollars at NAPA, etc, but all that was wrong with mine was it was dirty. Can you access the valve on your unit?

Wile E: You need to lean on your dealer. The repair is a warranty item. Here it is in writing cut and pasted from Ford's web site:

If you look about half way down the list its has "•Evaporative Emission Control System" I think this is what your having trouble with.

The link below is to Ford's 2013 warranty page on the Escape vehicle. I would think your 2011 would have much the same warranty.

Some of these New car Dealership service departments have amnesia when it comes to known problems with the cars they service. Had a Ford dealership tell me that they had not had any major issues with the 4.0 timing chains. I looked on the net and found literally thousands of links to people that had the same trouble. There even was a Ford recall up to so many miles for the problem. The service manager told me he did not know of any issues. I printed out some of the Ford service bulletins an then went to the owner of the dealership. Amazingly HE had heard of some problems when told him that they where going to get sued if they did not do something about this problem.

Sounds to me like your dealer is trying to rip you off. Dealerships do not make much of anything on warranty repairs. They usually lose money on them or break even at the best.

In TX the annual inspection station will throw you out without even checking the car/truck if ANY code is showing. Within 30 days, it has to be off the road or re-inspected and stickered. Tom
