I have a chop saw that started to bog down while not under a load. I cleaned the armature and found the brushes were chipped. Now as soon as I turn on the switch it trips the breaker. Anyone have any idea what the problem is, or what to check out?

Does it still spin freely?? Also you might blow out the brush area real good with compressed air and then make sure the brushes move easy in and out

I had a miter saw that did the same thing. The armature was bad-- look for discoloring of the windings on the armature

Matobo will give you a brand new one if you buy a case of blades. I would have to look but I think it was 306.00. It is something like 60 blades @5.30each and they throw in the saw. Now you just have to fine someone to buy 50 blades at 10.00 each.

J.Wondergem,
Take a volt ohm meter on continuity, put the neg on the end of the shaft and run the positive around where the brushes ride. If you get a reading anywhere on the meter, the armature is shot.if not check the wiring, might be a shorted out piece.HTH.

Cleaned it with some emery cloth, then cut the cracks down a little with a fine hack saw blade.
Thanks Lou. That's what I was looking for, to check for a short.
I put a new bearing in the drive end, but didn't check for lub by the brushes. I'll try that. Thanks guys.
