water pump rebuild

The water pump on my Allis Chambers 2900 series engine just went out. The Allis folks say the pump is no longer available because the company that used to make them went bankrupt. The good news is they have a rebuild kit in stock. If the housing is not damaged the current pump can be rebuilt.

How do you get them apart? Do you need a shop press? or can you heat the hub and impeller to get them apart? Does the hub the fan blades go on come off first? Or does it matter.

The kit comes with impeller and shaft and roller bearings, and seal.

You will need access to an arbor press for sure. Fan hub comes off first. Might be some sort of retainer or snap ring holding the seal/bearing assy. Head over to this site for more help.

Good morning, JOB

Some of those pump castings were cast iron and some were cast aluminum. The cast aluminum bodies are very easily damaged.

There are some special fixtures that aid in the dis-assembly and re-assembly of the pump.

If your dealer has these fixtures and knows how to use them, you would be wise to let them rebuild your pump. Should be about an hours labor charge.

As you already mentioned, these pumps are no longer available. You can't afford to ruin it.

I would check out Hemmings Classic car mag. There are some companies in there that rebuild pumps. No since in tanking a chance and breaking the one you have.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Without the water pump the rest of this machine is junk. I am thinking I do not have the equipment to rebuild this pump. And I doubt the kit has instructions with it.

JOB,

I have a personal friend in Ohio who is a genius at rebuilding old waterpumps, carburators, starters, generators, etc. His name is Larry Lietzow. His phone number is (330) 274-3274. If you call him, tell him Tom Hagerty gave him your number.

I guarantee that he can fix you up.

When I worked for NAPA, RAYLOC offered a rebuild service, where you sent in your old pump and they would rebuild it for you. Check with an old time NAPA employee.
