time to paint the house. it has aluminum siding .brush it on a few years ago. looking for a faster easier way.what kind of sprayer to use ?I was thinking a wagner power sprayer. I have seen both good and bad reviews.but looking for honest opinion.i have a good size air compreesser. can I spray latex paint with a air gun?

You need a high pressure sprayer like a Graco for spraying latex paint. No compressor needed just the pump which supplies the paint under high pressure through the hose all the way to the gun.

An airless would be the way to go for spraying latex. They sure are slick machines. Don't waste your money on a wagner. To spray with air you will need to thin your paint to get it through the gun.

You can use any sprayer desighned to handle latex without thinning. That pretty much narrows it down to airless which uses hydraulic pressure to atomize the paint(very pricey) and one that "slings"the paint in droplets(very affordable). My favorite method for 105,ship lap and other siding that can't be rolled is one man rolling and a secound man brushing the fresh paint behind the roller. The brush man tells the roller man if he needs to apply more paint or less paint as they go along. The brush man isn't doing all cut in,that is done by both men with brushes after the roller is put away. If both are hard workers the roller man covers ground faster so he keeps a brush in a bucket with just enough paint to cover bristels to hit a lick now and then so as not get far enough ahead that paint skims over before brush is applied. It gos much faster for nonpros than spraying, uses less paint while applying thicker coat and looks better. Try it,you'll like it.

Had a Wagner 500 airless, Sprayed several houses with it. Thin the latex paint by 20 +- percent, strain ALL paint through a sock made for that purpose. Metal siding does not absorb paint so keep the gun moving or the "runs" will overwhelm.

Yes. A two quart pressure pot and any syphon type gun like an old Binks 7 works fine. Harbor Freight sells the combo for $50.
Just using the gun without a pressure pot won't work, the paint's to thick.

I've sprayed my vinyl shutters several times using my air compressor and old Devilbiss spray gun. I used Sherwin Williams Super exterior latex paint.
They were painted in 1997 and still look good. A painting contractor was painting the trim on the house next to me last year and they used Sherwin Williams exterior Duration paint. They used it on their shutters using a Wineberry color. I'm thinking about repainting them when the weather cools. You would get overspray on everything using a spray gun. I spray my shutters out around the garden where there's no houses. I use a warm water soapy mix and a brush to clean them, then I rinse them and let them dry. I don't use a primer on them I give them 2 coats and let them dry which doesn't take long. I keep a brush handy in case I get a run. Hal

I'm a little confused here. I thought the whole idea of aluminum siding was so that you wouldn't have to be doing that.

You wouldn't want to do a whole house with it but spraying latex on smaller items does a very nice job.
I taped off my pantry a couple of years ago and used ordinary semi gloss interior latex and shot all the shelves and frames. Then I took the door to the half bath outside and shot it too.
Had to thin it down quite a bit to get it to go through my DeVillbiss automotive gun but was extremely happy with the results. No runs or brush marks. Very nice finish.
The door I painted in the hot sun. Light, thin coats.
Start at one end and by the time you get to the other end you can start over. About 5 coats.
Took maybe 1/2 hour altogether. Quicker than a brush for sure.

I saw a person spray house with a wagner. Got paint on soffets, windows, doors, block, even shingles. Over spray will be a problem.

I purchased a wagner 2 stage pump sprayer. Put hose in 5 gallon bucket and go to work. Used it to paint the inside of new construction. No carpet, doors, plastic over windows. Never again. A roller on drywall has texture, sprayer doesn't. It looked like a snow storm when I was painting. NO THANK YOU.

I had to paint very old aluminum siding the paint fell off. It had hail damage, dents, holes. Used painters caulk, filled the holes and dents. Many applications. Went to menards and got a special paint for aluminun. I wanted a flat textured finish to hide my work. Rolled it on and no problems. Might consider putting something in the paint to prevent mold too.

Knew of a guy that filled pellet gun holes with JB weld and sanded. Then rolled. I would not recommend spraying, a flat, gloss reflective finish will show all the sins in the siding.

I worked for a painter when I was a kid, 1980s.
We sprayed latex with an air pressure paint gun with 2hp compressor with 2 gallon paint tank, pressurized. I used thin cardboard pieces to keep the overspray off the areas we did not want painted.
Trust me, I sprayed schitt loads of latex on aluminum siding, drywall, wood.
You would be way ahead to buy the stuff I mention above.
I painted 3 homes that were aluminum siding refinishing jobs.

Don't buy the cheapest Wagner sprayers as they don't do a good job. Get one with 1/2 horse or bigger motor. I started with a 1/4 hp and diaphram pump then switched to a piston pump sprayer that has 7/8 horse[power motor. It can handle the larger nozzles so you can do the job faster. With the airless there is less drift then using air compressor type. You can adjust pressure to a certain point but there is a learning curve and masking windows etc is a good idea. The wagner piston type is a good unit and will last a long time with reasonable care. Having said that my commercial unit cost 2800.00 versus 600.00 for the above model Wagner so there is a big difference in quality as well as cost.

I have an industrial pump sprayer. It went for about $1400 new, don't remember the brand. There is virtually no over spray, sucks out of 5 gal. bucket, the hose is about twenty-five feet. SOOOOO much faster than rolling or brushing.

Dont laugh but i painted my house about a month ago with a 30 dollar hvlp (high volume low pressure) automotive sprayer. It cam with a small and a large tip that is for latex. I did thin it a little bit. Works great with hardly any overspray. I know it is slower that airless but i am happy results. But it does take a lot of air volume.

I had a friend who bought a professional unit from the rental department at home depot.(seems they do sell their rental units after they depreciate them to zero) he purchased it complete, with additional tips and extra hose, for less than $500

If it were me I would either use an airless sprayer or a compressor and a pressure pot spray rig. By the time you thin latex enough to go through a conventional sprayer it's too watered down and doesn't cover as well. With an airless you would thin very little or not at all.

I painted a house last week end with one of these I was impressed...
It took about 3hr I moved the sprayer 2 times (had a 50 ft hose) I had to add paint to the 5 gal bucket one time... Its the cats mewow...

I normaly use a wagner like this... It also does a good job but not as good a job the other does...

I would reat a nice sprayer if I did not want to shell out $400 and wouild not hisitate to shell out $400 for the one in the first link...

About 16 yrs ago, I did my 1 1/2 story, alum siding, w/a wagner. It can be done. Took me 3 weekends, but im a bit slow sometimes.
Clean siding well to remove any chalking.
I did not have to thin.
Kept a brush in my back pocket for the runs.
Plastic sheets and cardboard to keep paint off stuff you don't want painted.
Looked good enough to sell the house 6 mths later.

Good luck...don t. ....

I painted 3 houses with Wagner guns.
Did not thin the paint and used thick latex, just used the proper valve in it for thick paint.
When the paint cup was empty it was time to move the ladder anyway.

The last gun I got was a wide shooter or somesuch and it worked much better than the origional one.
