Condenser value

What is the value of a condenser for a B&S 8 hp engine? Old one measured .4uf. New old stock measured .2uf. I found a old condenser laying around from something and it measured .45uf. Is the value critical?

IDK. But WHY are you replacing a condenser that is apparently functional, just judging from the fact you tested it, and arrived at a mfd reading?

ven though there is an optimum value, they will run with a wide range, for example, I have had engines run with 0.2 micro-Farad up to as much as 55 micro-Farad! Occasionally one will run with no condenser at all, but generally better off with too large than none at all.

Id say the value is "fairly" critical. If its too high she may not fire at all while if its way too low (or even open) she can still fire (weaker spark) but the points will burn up sooner. Unfortunately I have no specs or data as to what that engine uses, sorry.

An analog ohm meter using the kickback test can give you an indication of the condensors characteristics and can show it its definitely BAD (shorted out etc) but not if its good and not its capacitance. For that you need a REAL capacitor tester.

Critical to running? No, it will run fine with any condenser that is in the ball park. Critical to long point life? A person can fine tune the value by watching the points, over value transfers point material one direction, under value transfers the other way. Used to know the actualities but most has left me due to non-use. Probably find it via internet search? If the points and condenser are buried like most B&S you probably would be better served with known correct parts.

Any time I work on a Briggs old enough to have points and condenser, I just replace the coil with a newer electronic version and eliminate them.

I pull them from the scrapyard for next to nothing and I don't think I've ever had a bad one.

Put the electronic coil in it and you will never mess with it again..
