Which brand of Multi Tool to buy

I have been looking at purchasing a electric (not battery)multitool. There are several brands available. Makita, Rigid, Ryobi, Bosch, etc. Any body have any experience with any of these?

I personally like Ryobi, but whatever you get, go for the newer lithium batteries, of the highest voltage you can find. You won't be disappointed.

Hi bob ,
I bought a Fein about 5 years ago. It wasn't cheap, but it gets used everyday. Blades are what cost the money. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the ones you mentioned.

I used a Harbor Freight model and it was fine. The replacement blades were better then the originals.

Hi Bob,

I got the Harbor Freight one, too, last summer. The blades seemed to need to be tightened an unreasonable amount or they would vibrate themselves loose. Aside from that it worked perfectly. It seems like the kind of tool that even a Harbor Freight one could last a long time---it's not tortured during normal use the way an angle grinder usually is. You could buy a Fein, of course, and have the pleasure of knowing you owned the very best. But couldn't you buy about twenty of the H/F ones for what a Fein cost? One thing about a cheap but adequate tool is that it doesn't make your blood run cold when you drop it on concrete---it's only a nuisance.

I just bought one at HF for $13 on sale. Works better than I expected and is great for cutting in the odd places like they show on tv. With the one year guarantee how can you go wrong?

5th yes on HF
Buy 2, get the 1 yr replacement on one of them and use them till they won't go.
Blade does need to be tightened excessively not to wigge loose.
Have a Bosch cordless that has a much better blade holding system...much bigger price tag too.

I also have a HF multi tool that the blades kept coming loose. I put a lock washer on the bolt that you tighten and that solved it.

D'oh (he says, slapping himself on the forehead). So simple---once someone else tells you about it.

Thanks. I probably would have continued to reef on the allen wrench until I started having to put a cheater on it, and/or stripped the threads.

I have done a lot of research and it looks like Fein, Bosch and the newer Dremel are the highest rated. The tool acc. Availability would be a consideration in your area.

Hey Stan.

No to hijack the thread but your post reminded me of a day when I dropped a Makita drill/driver out of the bucket about 25 feet above the concrete.

It hit and the case went one way and the battery another.

Strangely when I put them together it ran fine but had a wobble..... Kinda like a multi-tool!

I bought a rockwell because I liked the tool less blade change and you can really get the blade tight. The cheaper ones needed a wrench for the blade change and the convenience was worth the extra money long term. The cost is soon forgotten if the quality remains.

Have 2 of the HF models and never a problem with blade comming loose and they do come with a custom design lock washer. One type of tool on each unit.
