I'm working with my grandson shooting targets with my Dad's old Winchester single-shot bolt-action .22. He's doing well since we sighted it in, but we've used almost all my stock of shells. Walmart and Atwood's Farm supply have been telling me for a year that they have them ordered, but they don't seem to be getting any in stock. Does anybody know where some might be available? Gun shows, maybe?

Check out sites like Armslist, and Backpage for the area your in. Lately there has been someone on the back-Page Raleigh site with bricks for like $40. Yes that's about double what they used to be, but still way below the $70 plus some are asking. Basically the prices have started to fall back down on everything but there are still way to many individuals out there who spend their time looking and buying it up cheap and then selling it for twice what they paid.

As far as the gun shows, I've been to nearly every one that has been in my area since around October of last year. I saw prices low, then saw them go through the roof, and am now seeing them coming back down to somewhat normal levels. That is on about everything but the .22 LR. For whatever reason it has been hoarded to the point that it's nearly impossible to find the cheap stuff anymore. The 50 round boxes of the 'good' stuff are more available now than they have been in 6 months or so, but your still going to pay a premium for it, over the cheap stuff, just like always.

Beyond that all I can say is good luck.

Woodbutcher,

Maybe it's just a red-neck thing, but we have gun shops all over our area. They were short on ammunition about a year ago, but I think they have pretty well recovered.

I bought a box of 30/30 shells and two boxes of .22 long rifle shells a couple of weeks ago at one of the gun shops, and they had plenty more in stock.

Do you have any gun shops near you?

Tom in TN

Targets?? I do not buy them I use soda bottles filled with water or other such things. More fun to shoot at things to react when hit. But we also shoot some stuff that will cause the soda bottle to explode on impact like my 44mag

As in target rifle so your trying to find ammo??? Yep 22 ammo is hard o find now days due to what we have in D.C.

Keep looking at Wal-Mart they keep trickling into our store. Also any time you go by a gun shop stop in you some times are surprised what you find in small gun shops. Be prepared pay a lot more than you use to pay.

Academy and Dicks are keeping them at the front of store at service desk. Sometimes have the 335 block and sometimes just the boxes of 50. Wal=mart also keeps the 22 L R and 223 hid from view.

You can teach him a lot shooting paper targets.
Shoot ten shots and add up his score. 90 is good. Get him to try for 100. All 10's. A pop bottle hit could be 5 inches off aim point.
Also you use the spotting scope and get him to "call " his shots. In other words,"7 at three o'clock" That teach him not to flinch and to follow through.
After he has learned the fine points of shooting, and has the four different shooting positions ( offhand, kneeling, sitting, prone)
down pat, then you can start shooting/plinking, cans, bottles and dirt clods etc.
That's how the elite shooting units in the military teach rifle skills.

Yes, that's how I learned. I have found some targets I printed off LuckyGunner.com that have 5 bull's eyes on a sheet. Another has one large bull's eye with the outer areas marked for the common cause for misses in that area.

Go get him a pellet rifle. That or learn to reload and cast your own bullets and get something like a 357 lever gun you can shoot 38's in.

I ordered a bucket (1,400 rounds) of 22 LR from Sportsman's Guide the end of December, the expected delivery date was 1/23/13, since that time the date has been revised 6 times as follows:

7/8; 5/29; 6/5; 7/30; 7/8 and finally 8/17

I'm glad I was buying for "inventory" with no immediate need! But I'm reluctant to do any target shooting with the 22 LR's I have on hand for fear that there might not me any more available for a while.

On Wednesday, I tried "Gander Mountain"...None,
but expecting some Thursday...expect line up before store opens. "Blains Farm-Fleet", in WI
none, "Don't know when we'll get any". Tried a
Mom and Pop sport shop...they had 5 box's,525 of "Fiochi" Italian brand at $39.99 per box,and
50 box's of 50 each, of a Mexican brand for $3.99
each !

Be sure to call before you drive very far with the price of gas these days.

Your best bet may be asking your hunting buds for an ammo loan if they are well stocked.

I just took my 10 year old nephew out for his first time. He was a very happy boy!

( I took the pictures out)

This morning I lucked out and was able to buy two boxes of ammo.

(picture of ammo)

I placed the boxes on the front seat and headed back home, but stopped at a gas station where a drop-dead gorgeous blonde in a short skirt was filling up her car at the next pump.

She glanced at the two boxes of ammo, bent over and leaned in my passenger window, and said in a sweet voice, "I'm a big believer in barter, old fella. Would you be interested in trading some "physical contact" for ammo?"

(picture of me thinking)

I thought for a few seconds and asked,

"What kind of ammo 'ya got?"

I haven't seen anything at any Wal-Mart in Kansas yet. They can now get rifles, but ammo (beside shotgun) is still very short. I stopped by there over lunch - absolutely "0" pistol ammo and a couple boxes of 30-30 and one box of 300 Win Mag.

I have three 550 each boxes. have been carefull how I use them as I have seen some 550 boxes go for $75 a box. Due to the yoyo in DC
