wire locator tool

I have a bunch of 14-3 wire to locate behind drywall and need to determine where they go behind the drywall and where they hookup into a circuit breaker box. This is a rental older house I am working on that the wiring is all confused and jury rigged.

I bought the Sperry LAN tracker to use and it doesn"t work at all.

Does anyone have a better product to recommend?

Wonder if that trick the fellow the other day did would work ? He located some underground with a weather radio and one end hooked to a wire wrapped around a spark plug lead on a weed eater or hedge trimmer ?

I have a little tester that works for me. I call it a proximity tester, it looks like a felt pen and when you get it close to a hot wire it beeps. We found a wire in the wall behind our range hood by turning off breakers one at a time. I think I bought it at Home Depot.

For about $100 you can buy a tester for phone lines that has 2 alligator clips to hook on to any wires and test for them. If has an oversized pencil looking receiver to pick up the signals. I have one and it will work for that, buy kinda pricey for a one time deal.

i have a tool i bought from HF. you plug the transmitter into the suspected circuit and take the receiver to the breaker box and touch each breaker one by one. it will beep when you touch the proper breaker. 40 buks as i remember

Try Googling "circuit tracer" or "circuit seeker". I know Greenlee, 3m, and Gardner Bender all make circuit tracers. May not come cheap though!

then of course there is always this neat tool,
current price: $89 and change
