Propane Refueling

What stops me form being able to put together a system that will refill my truck off my 500 gallon LP tank? Do I have to pay road taxes? Is there a system I can buy with a meter on it so that I don't over fill my 25 gallon tank? I would like to get a system that has a pump on it so that I do not have to rely on pressure differential. Is that possible? Lastly, would I need to invert my tank so that the liquid fuel was at the bottom or do i have to have a tank with a wet valve installed?

You asked a bunch of questions, I will do the best I can. Can you put together a system that will refill a truck from a 500 gal LP tank ? Yes. Do you have to pay road taxes ? You are supposed to. A meter that says when the tank is full ? No, the tank will have a gage or a roto valve. A pump vs pressure differential, yes you can, but pricey. No idea what you mean when you say "invert your tank" or what you would hope to gain by that. Certianly no dealer would fill it. We used to run 120 gal tanks in pickups set up for duel fuel, and dad was a propane dealer. Frankly it was not worth the bother. I can't imagine trying to live with a 25 gal propane tank in any sort of truck save perhaps a forklift.

First of all, Scott is correct that a 25 gal. propane tank for a truck is way too small and that some sort of gauge should be on the tank. Second, yes, you can refill from a 500 gal tank, if it has a wet fitting with a tube that goes to bottom of the tank. You just have to bleed off vapor on your truck's tank as the nurse tank's pressure forces liquid into the truck's tank. A pump system is better, but $$. As far as road tax, I would think that you are supposed to pay. In NM in the '70s, the state wanted propane used, so no road tax was required. Doubt that is the case today.
