What tool do I use

I am over hauling my tractor generator. I have turned the commutator and now need to under cut the mica. I know they make a machine to do this but I don't have one. Any suggestions as to what tool to use or technique to use.

You could use a hacksaw blade.That is what shade
tree mechanics have done for years.Luck,JimAnderson

Cut off wheel in a dremel tool works well if you have a steady hand.

If you used a lathe to turn it use same lathe to undercut. Grind a tool to the correct width and set to depth. With the brake or other means hold the chuck steady while taking out a bit of the mica with the carriage handwheel. That's how I do it.

I'll be the third vote for the end of a hacksaw blade. Just draw it toward the end of the armature a few times, and you'll be good to go.

the thickness of the hack saw blade needs to be groung down to the width of the mica

there is a triangular file made just for that, it is also curved

As I recall, old auto repair manuals suggested a broken off hack saw blade.
