Variable drive

I have two projects that could really benefit from a variable drive motor. Both are material feeds, one on a saw and the other on a winder. I've mocked up the drive using my 18V Milwaukee cordless drill and that has just the right RPM range and plenty of torque. So when I transfer that info (torque specs and RPM) to the local electrical and motor shop I hear "can't be done". I can't figure out why a $200 drill can get the job done but they can't match up a motor and controller to do the same thing. The hose clamps holding the drill on to the fixture just don't look too professional. And I'm not above spending more to get a good unit.

Anyone know of a company that makes kits that have the motor and the controller all ready to go?

Take a look at variable frequency drive units. They change single phase to 3 ph. You need a 3 ph. motor but you can dial in the speed you need.

look at the grainger catalog under dc gear reduction motors. they have 90v motors that have speed controllers available. all different rpm and horsepower available.

I don't know if it would fit your applications, but consider a treadmill motor. People, overweight women mostly, tend to discard treadmills quite often. Grab the motor and controller and try it. What the hey, it's free. I have one on a drill press, works pretty good.

Your issue is that the Drill is DC current. DC current is much easier to make variable speed. Ac is tough to do and is not simple.

Like the Brett4207 posted, Find a tread mill. They have a variable speed motor on them. Most of them do switch the current to DC. The only question is the duty cycle of a tread mill motor.

I have found the duty cycle of the treadmill motors to be longer than the duty cycle of those using them :)
