Propane or electric

Propane, if it is an easy install, and/or you use a lot of hot water. If propane will be a big problem to install and you don't use much hot water then perhaps the electric would be the way to go.
Google propane vs. electricity.

I like everything to be total electric, one bill. Propane is in my opinion a pain. You have to have or rent a tank. Pay all at once to fill up. When it gets really cold the pressure drops. You are less likely to have an explosion with gas.

All my rental places and even my home are total electric.

Where I live, the more electricity you use the cheaper the kw-hr rate.

Propane has a faster recovery time than electric so if you go electric you will need a larger water heater than if you use gas. If you want endless hot water with electric you would have to go with the tankless electric water heater which are a little salty in price.

I have propane and no problem and am on budget billing. You have to compare the costs. Some places the cost of propane is high and some places it is low. Some electric companies are getting rid of discounts for all electric. Every location if different.

There"s something else to consider. Our electric co-op offers a program where they turn on the water heaters at night (we have two) and offer a sustantial discount. If you"re on a rural co-op you might ask them about such a program. As a note we never run out of hot water during the day which is why they insist of having two.

I have electric I do not like propane any thing other then for emergencies and then that is for heat and maybe cooking like in 2007 with the ice storm and no power for 7 days. Now if all goes well I may end up with wood water heating in the winter

Is your electricity flat rate or time of day? The local electrical shop carries 24/7 timers . Just wire the timer into the lower element.
Hot water for one person or for the herd of water buffalo I"m raising? By the the the 3rd one showers the water is turning cold with a 60 gallon heater.

If you already have propane to the house, propane water heater is the way to go. If it's necessary to install electric, install a timer so it only heats water when you know you'll need it.

We have a 50 gal electric. 96% efficiency. Power company gave a $300 re ate. Water heater cost me $330 5 years ago. I installed it myself...had less than $50 invested. Only time our family of six loses hot water is when they don't get out of the shower when told and I go down and shut the valve off. That gets them out on a hurry! Can't give a comparison to gas as all we have ever had is electric.

awlknottedup,

Go to on demand water heater,no wasted electricity. When our electric fails, thats what we are going to.No fuss, No muss.JMO.

Go with a tankless propane, only works when the faucet on, and NEVER run out of hot water.(as long as you have gas)

If you live in an area with hard water you have to have a good water softener of a tankless will lime up and die in no time
