WD45 overheating issue

Hi all,
I have an opportunity to buy a WD45 that has an overheating problem. It runs fine but after about 15 minutes it starts to overheat. He wants $1200.00 for it. I will buy it if it won't cost me an arm and a leg to fix it. He seems to think that the head is cracked or the head gasket is blown, but he doesn't know for sure. What could the problem be?

Well lets start small and work up. If no water in the oil or oil in the coolant then.
#1 radiator need to be washed out so air can flow threw it.
#2 clogged up cooling system that needs to be flushed. I use vinegar.
#3 bad thermostat
#4 bad water pump
#5fan belt bad or loose
And I could add more but those are the most common

Thanks for the reply "old". According to what I seen when looking at the tractor, I didn't notice anything in the oil and no oil was evident in the radiator. There was no white smoke in the exhaust like when coolant enters the combustion chamber. The fan belt seemed ok. In your opinion, would this tractor be worth $1200.00? It has a loader and a dirt and snow bucket that comes with it. It has been converted over to 12 volts. The rubber is very good all around. I welcome your opinions.

That is kind of full market value on them around here. I think with the overheating issue it is too high a price. A good running , no issue WD-45 will hardly break $1000 around here. North-East Iowa.

Thanks JD. That is good to know. That will help with the bartering process. What is a fair price to offer?

A lot depends on how mechanical you are. If you are
looking for trouble free ease and reliability then this 50+
year old tractor is not for you.

That said, if the rear tires are in like-new condition, the
engine block is not cracked, and (assumed somewhat
modern) loader is not damaged/extensively welded, you
really can't go wrong at $1,200. But I'd still start negotiating
at $900.....

Well with good tires that brings up the price a bit. Figure new tires for it would cost you $800 plus now days.
That said I have seen them sell for as little as $750 at auction I know I payed that for the WD45 I have and I have also seen a WD sell at auction for $2500. Here in Missouri the WD and WD45 seem to sell well

I've got a no issue WD45 sitting in my front yard with a pull behind 6' brush hog that isn't selling for $1500. So around here (SW MI) $1200 may be a little steep.

Thanks for all of the comments and suggestions guys. I like all of the feedback. Keep it coming.

OK a couple more two cents. Old engines have a water problem. That is old time farmers
would run them on straight water!!!!! I do mean some crappy water. Anti freeze has water pump lube and anti rust qualitys and then the anti freeze itself. You get nice little flakes of rust build up in the narrow water passages and now you have over heat problems. The other is you have a plugged up radiator. Not internal..but external. Grass-chaff gets in all of the air passages. Air hose time. Water pumps with worn impellers can also be a pain in the butt. Those are a few of my tips. Jeffcat

Hi all,
I stopped by to do some further evaluation on the tractor. Near as I can tell, according to the serial #208662 or something like that, the tractor should be a wd45, or at least the rear half. the radiator shroud has a faded wd sticker with no 45. The research that I have done says if it is a wd there will be a bolt on plate on the right side of the engine block. If it is a wd45, there is no plate. This one has a bolt on plate so it should be a wd. Correct? The serial number I was referring to was located on the top of the trans housing. Is it possible that this tractor is a wd with a wd45 rear end?

Go here for the location of the serial number location.

Well guys, thanks to Dusty, I now have the correct serial number. It is WD138357, which I believe is a 1946 WD. I love this site and all of you people, the information you all have is priceless. Many thanks! When checking the SN today I noticed that the belt pulley is missing from the right side. So, my next question is what difference in value is there between the WD and the WD45?

Send me a PM with your e-mail. I tried to post another web site about AC but YT will not allow me to post it.
