Working light not working

Finished up the coon/possum/skunk electric fence around the sweet corn this morning. It's Ac. Plugged it in and the two lights; "working" and "not working" were bothout. Then I remembered that I had just finger tightened the thumb screw on the positive terminal. So I grabbed the pliers and squeezed on the terminal and WHAM! It'd definitely working. I had just attached that lead and I could see that the screw went into the box and there were no insulators around it. DUH!
Actually it was not the old deep muscle grabbing hit that I remember from my youth, but more like the hi frequency burning sensation like the dog training collars. Is that the norm for all of them now?

Electric fencers teach hard lessons. The new ones are energy savers dont ya know? I have Dad's 1960s IHC "weed chopper" to keep the varmints out of my garden and let me tell ya it reaches "deep" as you said.

That hurts. I know. I was working on my electric fence that starts out at my house and runs around the woods back behind the house. I had disconnected the "gate" so as to deaden the fence while I worked on it. My wife comes out of the house, (not knowing I was working on the fence) sees the electric gate handle laying on the ground and promptly goes and hooks it back up. WHAM!! I'm pretty sure it took out my left shoulder and the right testicle.

Sounds like one of those el-cheapo continuous types instead of a more costly pulser. I consider them dangerous as there is no 'let go' pause. Seen dead birds, squirrels, snakes, etc. sizzling on those.

Years ago I used a pulser fencer. At one spot the
fence was about a inch or inch and a half from a
tree. The fence was shorted out one day so I walked
the fence line and found a flying squirrel hanging
by his teeth dead. I assume he got bit by the wire
as he climbed the tree. In retaliation he bit the
wire.
