the old ice box just aint making it anymore time for something new any input? what brands should I avoid? I dont want all of the gadgets, just something to keep my food cold, and my pizzas frozen

Don't know which brand, but check the instructions and try to get one that don't have to be in a controlled temperature room. My home is not central heated and frig. don't run when the room is cold, it'll even thaw out the frozen things in freezer part.

Wayne, that's good info-did not know they make some models to sense room temp.

Ours is getting old (still running great 20+ yrs) and hate getting new one with R134 cooling and replacement every 8-9 years

We bought a new Kenmore 12 yrs. ago. Top refidge bottom freezer. No problems don"t know who makes them for Sears but have had good luck with a whole hose full of Sears appliances!

Whirlpool makes most other brands of refridgerators, including Kenmore, so I figured we just as well buy a Whirlpool. Got a new Whirlpool with French doors and bottom freezer nearly 3 years ago that we really like.

I like an ice maker and water in the door. Don't think the bottom freezers have ice makers, could be wrong, just never seen one. Know people who have bottom freezers, don't think they have shelf. Don't you have to pile everything on top of other things?

Don't think they make the trouble free ref's any more, the ones with the coils on the back. I have about a dozen ref in rental places and the less work I can do the better. Tried to buy one recently and no luck.

I like shopping at Lowes, because they have FREE delivery. The last one was a Haier. Around $350 on sale. Take a gallon jug and a 2 liter bottle with you. A gallon jug will only fit on the bottom shelf of the door, don't like that. This was a second ref for the garage. Nice to pull the car in and put the extra things in that ref. Who would have thought, you couldn't adjust the shelf height in the door.

I always wait for a holiday sale. Sometimes HH gregg gives me a contractor's price, which really isn't much. Or they may have a scratch, dent or end of model sale.

Who delivered your ice for your ice box? :)
George

Avoid Frigidaire. Their products are poor quality and they don't want to honor any warranty claims. Last refrigerator I bought from them lasted less than 4 years--no warranty of course. I've had freezers and dehumidifiers of that brand and nothing but problems. On the dehumidifier they insisted -over the phone- that the sealed system could not go bad. Took several calls and threatening them with consumer protection division of AG's office I finally got a little rebate on a new one.

I bought a new Whirlpool from Lowes 4 years ago , a side by side. I've been very happy with it .

Seems the few I've experienced lately are

LOUD

and seem to

RUN FOR HOURS ON END

did I say

LOUD

sounds like a construction site in the kitchen at night for hours on end without apparent reason.

more than one like this

Hello George Marsh,

Yes they make bottom freezer, French door, and ice and water in the door. You are not going to find one for $400.oo though. Whirlpool no longer makes then for Kenmore, they are now made by LG.

Guido.

Hello Dick2,

I thought so as well No longer the case, the Sears units are now made by LG,

Guido.

Guido, I've never been a fan of bottom freezers. When people ask for advice on buying things, we tell them I've had a good side by side whirlpool for 25 years, which I have, but that is old out dated advice. I remember when whirlpool pulled out of Indiana and moved off shore I think. I was a fan of whirlpool, liked working on them too. Liked GE's and Fridg, but who know where they are made today? Seems like everything is made where the labor is cheaper. The way we have a tax and spend society, I'm afraid more companies won't move out of the US and we will ask WHY?

IMHO, the only good advice about any produce is the advice that is only a few years old. That advice will be what not to buy. I know for sure what washing machine I won't buy in the future. It's the one I bought a year ago.

I can remember when some brands meant quality, now they are not so good, black and decker for one.

Six months ago went to Lowes. Bought a Samsung side by side.Freezer would not freeze after the third day. Called Lowes and the wife was told it would be a least a week before a Samsung service tech wuold be available. After I called and was through telling the Lowes manager where he could stick his new Samsung another was delivered and the first was picked up. Four days later still no ice from the ice maker I drove to Lowes got a refund had it picked up and went to a local Appliance store and bought a Fridgidare. Absolutely no problems. Been married 40 years and this is the Third refridge. All frigidare.

We bought a Whirlpool side by side four years ago and have had no problems so far. Has ice maker and water in the door. None of them are cheap in price though.

Billy C. I bought a Frigidaire dehumidifier 4 years ago and I for the first time bought the extra warranty. I have had to replace it every year because it ices up after about a year. I believe it loses Freon or whatever the gas. I am glad I bought the extra warranty because I have paid once and got 4 and I may have to use it again. The Frigidaire is made in China.

We just bought a new Frigidaire freezer from Sears this past March. It replaced a Whirlpool freezer. I think I had two service calls on it
in about 20 years. Hal

Whirlpool side by side of 23 years died about a year ago. Went to Lowes and bought on sale Samsung double door with bottom freezer drawer. Very quiet, extremely efficient as minimal cold air lost from freezer section when open, very large-well lit- freezer drawer with intermediate shelf/basket, all items in fridge section easily seen (no bending), dual crisper drawers-seem to keep salad/veggies longer, LED interior lighting. Don't care for thru door ice/water, didn't get it. All in all, Mrs. sc (and I) very happy with it, works well for us!

My wife decided she wanted one of those French door, bottom freezer type. She HATES it. There is not enough space in the top part for much of anything.

My price leader, made in China Crosley freezer is going on 16 years old, never a lick of trouble.
Very quiet and cools fast.

It's amazing that most of the "usual" brands are now made by the same company. Replacement parts are same for Frigidare, Kenmore, Whirlpool, Roper, etc. etc. Most owned by Electrolux or some other BIG corp.

We bought a new Kitchen Aid last year. French door, bottom freezer, stainless steel exterior. So far it has been just fine, very quiet and roomy.

We like the new unit much better than our old side by side. I really didn"t think we needed a new fridge, but my wife did. We moved the old one out to the garage and keep both of them full.

We were lucky enough to find our new refrigerator at a "ding and dent" sale. It does have a small dent in one side, but that cannot be seen as there are cabinets in the way. It also does not have the water and ice through the door like the old one did. Because it was slightly damaged, we paid about HALF of the retail price, with a full warranty. We are fully satisfied.

Whirlpool makes about 75% of the refrigerators now, just pick out a simple one. The guts are the same for several brands.

Reminds me of my neighbor last week. His wife told him the refrigerator had quit. He told her to make sure the outlet was working. She plugged the radio in the refrigerator outlet and it worked. So they went to town and bought a new refrigerator. When the new one was delivered the delivery guys plugged in the new one and it didn't work. Neighbor checked the breaker for that circuit and it was tripped. Then he went and looked at the radio his wife had used to check the outlet. It was turned to battery.

Of course the Sears stores around here are closing....

I would go with whirlpool for the best combination of reliability price and parts availibility.

Of course I still have an old IH fridge too :)
Still works.

DO NOT buy Fridgidare. SWMBO picked one out that didn't work from day one of delivery. Under warranty but service tech comes out and says "yep your right it's broke, I'll order parts and see you in 7-10 days". We've had 3 of those so far in 2 months. The ice maker is junk and won't keep up with the 2 of us. Service tech says that's all it makes.

I buy the cheapest Whirlpool appliances for my rent houses and they work perfect for a long time.

Also was told ,no proof of it, but if you put a self defrosting freezer in your garage it wont defrost as it is to cold to cycle.

I got a bottom freezer kenmore (LG made model) about 8 months ago. Like the fridge, but already waiting on the service tech to come fix the light switch. Hope it is not the sign of things to come.

Go to Sam's (if you have a card) and buy the cheapest one they make. Will most likely last as long as anything else you could buy because its probably made by the same company.

Bought a new Frigidaire for my Dad"s house about 7 years ago. Went bad about a year and a half later but I replaced the defrost timer and it has been working great ever since. The timer overheated and the contacts stuck.

I wonder if they have a recall website for appliances like they do for cars.

Lastly, I was read that someone takes a gallon milk jug with them to check sizes. I found that putting the milk in a door shelf reduces the life of the milk due to the door shelf being a bit warmer. As a single guy, milk does last a bit longer for me, so I try to get as much life out of it as I can.

According to the reviews and reports online, LG and Samsung have more problems and the worst service and warranty.

Even though you can buy those brands in lots of places, they will only service and warranty through certain assigned dealers of their brand.

Only time the freezer compartment light switch sticks is with frost.. when the lazy azz kids give the door a shove and run away with the icecream they are not supposed to be eating. And they don't ensure the door rolls closed.

LG and Samsung are made in Korea. look up their reliability ratings and you will get a feel for what you are getting.

My daughter has a Frigidaire and the door bushings are so sloppy that she can't use the milk jug spot in the door or it will sag and not seal.

I have a Maytag as a beer/overflow fridge in the garage and it has been humming along out there for over 10 years with no problems. I have a GE side by side in the house that's 13 years old with no issues.

I like Maytag and Whirlpool appliances as well as GE. No matter what you get I would search for reviews on line.

Can't stand a fridge with the little used freezer on top. And having to squat or kneel to find all the lost and forgotten bowls of fungus on the bottom two selves.

Bottom freezer rolls out on two trays giving full access.

My 2 cents. Have Maytag, bottom freezer, single door ref section.
Freezer section has rolling basket to give 2 levels. Ice maker a bit inconvenient, but we don't use much ice, so no big deal.
All shelves in ref section, including door shelves, are adjustable.
Hint- since most single door units are reversable, set it up to be convenient for chief cook. SWMBO is right handed, so I set it up with hinges on left. Can open door with left hand, reach in with right. No crossing hands or switching. Had to take door off to get it in the house, so only took an extra 10 minutes to change.
Use in non climate controlled location- most,& key word is MOST, refrigerators are controlled by main box thermostat. Main box temp is more critical than freezer temp, 10° too cool, things freeze, 10° too warm & things spoil. Freezer temp can vary over wider range with no harmful effects. Cooling coils are in freezer section, it cools first, & cool air circulates through vents to ref section. If located in cool area, such as garage where temp is 40°, the main box is cool enough, the unit won't kick on, & freezer also warms up to 40°. Just the nature of the beast.

Here in the western Pennsylvania area, the local power suppliers have a deal where they will remove your old frig, or freezer, free. I have one in the cellar that has been running for at least 30 years. But, since the wife and i both are getting older, we aren't adept at climbing stairs holding a large package of frozen something. So, as the contents were rather old, and way out of date, i cleaned it all out and shut it off. Then i called the electric company to come get it. they asked if it was still running. I told them no, but i had shut it off a few weeks before. That jerk told me, if it wasn't running, they wouldn't take it! Well, just what nut-case would toss out a running fridge or freezer?! Well, their advertising made good advertising, but produced not much to scrap!

You probably wouldn't believe that putting dry ice in a freezer, to keep it cold, could ruin it either. If you have enough it's too cold at -70 deg's.

My wife told me once we needed a new fridge. I told her to open the door and see if the beer is cold. She did and it was cold so I told her we don't need a new fridge.

Make sure to have it warrantied real well, at least for a couple of years. Something about the compressors in the new ones seem to know when the one year warranty is up. Just be careful. They aren't cheap and at the one year mark, you don't want to have to pay for a new compressor. Just went through that a couple of months ago with a nicer, more expensive model and brand, that I didn't pick out because I was along for the ride to pay for it and keep my mouth shut when it came to looks, abilities, and price tag. And like a moron paying for it, I only paid for a one year warranty, no extended warranty. And on a long holiday weekend, or actually the day before...Kaplooey. Learn from my mistakes. If you can get a two year warranty in this area, do it. The old ones just seemed to go and go and go. The new ones? They are smart and apparently can not only tell time, but understand it and go on strike, or quit the day before a holiday weekend.
