Electric ? Not a ground ?

Got a couple of non ground questions. Can wire be spliced in underground PVC and meet code. 2nd question, can white water PVC be used for electrical purposes underground or anywhere else and meet code. Want to use 20ft sticks and can not find in electrical PVC. Got a NEC book a few years ago but you need to be a John T to make heads or tails of it.

Water PVC pipe is the same as electric conduit but water PVC is NOT UL rated. So code does not allow water pipe to be used for conduit.

And wire is NOT allowed to be spliced in side conduit. It must be in an approved box, unless it is direct buried, no conduit.

The Good Dusty man has ya covered (he's an electrician thats wayyyyyyyy more current then I am in this business), you can buy splice kits but as he noted its NOT for splicing inside conduit. At our facility I always specified splices be in approved junction boxes (grounded if metallic) that were in an accessible location.

The NEC books I had best luck understanding were the illustrated versions with tons of pictures and explanations. The hard core text only versions would drive a man to drink...

WE REPORT NOW YOU DECIDE, its your house and money and risk, do it however your little heart desires lol

About 40 years ago, my sister owned a house in Chicago. Her central A/C was tripping the circuit breaker. She thought her A/C was bad. Not sure if it's code in Chicago, but her A/C was installed with metal conduit. Some idiot spliced the wire with electrical tape. The splice shorted out against the conduit.

Heat is the enemy of anything electrical that is why it it is critical to use the right sized conduit. Splices may increase the resistance in the circuit which produces heat. This increase heat affects the long term effectiveness of the splice which usually ends in failure. Might also add, conduit does not mean it is watertight. Nearly ever wire i have seen that is removed from conduit has had water and mud in it.

Of course I agree, all splices must be accessible.

But, has anyone else ever encountered a factory splice in a roll of wire? Once I did. I noticed a very small bulge in the insulation. When examineing it closely I found that the area was much stiffer than the other areas of the wire. So, I peeled off the insulation to find a neat resistance weld. They had overlapped the wires about 1/2" and welded them together!

Never found a splice but did have a spool that had two pieces twisted together about 200' in. They just bent a loop in each and kept on spooling! Luckily the guy feeding off the cart was paying attention, it was a 250' pull of about 60 control wires!

Splice in conduit.....bad idea, and not legal
White PVC is for water....not electric, not legal.
20' PVC.....they do make 20' electrical conduit, not going to find at big box store.....likely only at electrical supply house, and still may have to special order.

It does take experience and training to use the NEC. It is NOT a installation manual, but rather a reference on correct installations.
