House Jacks

Can you buy an old fashion house jack anymore? All I have seen at the box stores are those posts that you can screw on.

EDIT - A little background...I am looking to jack up the corner of my barn because the sill is looking a little rotten. It hasn't gotten any worse in the last 4 year, but I would like to take care of it just in case.

i got a few off e bay a while back. the ones I bought were made by jet. they were in better shape and cheaper than the ones I've been chasing at the auctions. the place I bought them didn't charge shipping. still can't believe it.

We have grabbed a few 1800's screw jacks at
auctions...cheap...served their purpose...$25
Also used 30ton hyd. Jacks in leveling our house.
Can loan you a handful of them in NY.

I'll have to get out my 20% coupon!

(quoted from post at 03:38:33 06/17/13) Google search for "screw jack" and you can find them.

That's the ticket! I knew they still had to be out there.

Thanks for all the offers guys. Problem is I am in Wisconsin. I checked Craigslist, but there wasn't much to offer. I have seen them on eBay for around $50 and that seems to be the way to go.

Also - those old railroad jacks are good for that kind of work, as long as you have room to work the handle. They're a ratchet type, so you have to have up & down room for the handle. The nice thing about them is the toe that's designed to slip under the rail. It lets you start out from nearly zero and go up. In a barn - OK - under a house - not OK. I have a couple of both kinds, but they're in Southern Illinois. They've been all over the neighborhood, but they always come home :~)

As long as you are buying a jack, a hydraulic jack trumps a screw jack any day. That's why every one will gladly lend you their old screw jack. I bought a thirty ton Hdp press and use the jack as needed for other purposes, go hdy and don't look back..LOL. BTW I have several screw jacks sitting in the corner of the garage as well collecting dust.

Even for things like barn repair? The one thing I like about screw jacks is they will not settle like a hyd jack. I can jack the barn a little each day until it gets high enough to raise the wall off the sill. With a hyd it would probably settle down overnight.

If you have a hydraulic jack that settles over time it is defective and most likely the pinch valve.
A good jack will hold its load over a long period of time---I have used hydraulic jacks many times on Pile load tests and have held up to 100 tons for more than a week.
