OT but interesting question for math gurus

Last week was my Daughters 47th birthday. I went to store to buy those candles that are the shape of a number. I reached up to get a 4 and 7 and while doing that it hit me that this week I am 74 and can use the same candles. How often, if ever, has our age had numbers reversed. Could it happen more often for persons age with different age spread?

12, or 21
23, or 32
41, or 14
13, or 31
26, or 62
36, or 63
46, or 64
51, or 15
The list can go on and I would be sitting here for an hour to figure it all out.

I didn't make my self clear.

I wanted to know if this ever happened before with me and my Daughter. beside 47 and 74 but any other age when our numerals were reversed at the same time.

Because you and your daughter share a 27 year spread there have been a few. Off the top of my mind, the couple that came to mind were when she was 14 (and you were 41) and when she was 25 (and you were 52). I like math things like that - I'm a math teacher.

It's also summer, so my brain isn't working at capacity! Let me think about how to figure the total...

Problems similar to this used to be presented in algebra classes, or in the algebra portion of slightly more complex math classes such as pre-calculus. Did you create a formula that would give you the answer, or did you do it by trying every possibility (what I think of as using the brute force approach)? Just curious.

beginning at your Daughter"s age of 14 (and your age of 41) it happens every eleven years.
The system breaks down after your Daughter"s age of 69 (and your age of 96) because you go into three digits and she is still at two digits.
I don't think this works for all age differences. It does however seem to work for an age difference of 27, 36,45, and 54 ( with beginning ages of 14, 15, 16 , and 17).
Go figure.

Double post. But I will say I sure hope you make it to 101! My Great Grandma will turn 100 next year.

The two digits add together to make 9. There are a number of "number games" that involve multiples of 9.

(quoted from post at 10:10:53 06/17/13) Sure it will. 58 & 85, 69 & 96. How about 03 & 30?

Thanks to all of you. Seems this has happened 5 times and I never noticed it before. Wouldn't have this time if I hadn't been buying the candles and there the numbers just stuck out at me.

It always intrigued me that one could wear a 1961 class ring upside down, and no one would notice it.

every 11 years this should repeat. When she was 14 you were 41;she was 25,you 52;she was 36 you 63. Hang on til 85 and you can do it again. Joe
