Shop Electrical Issue-Update

Well I'm an idiot, the electrician just left. It was just a fuse in the box. Being a younger guy, I don't have a lot of experience with fuse boxes, mostly just breaker boxes. What I thought was a block off plate for a nonused line, actually had 2 fuses inside the little plastic box and one was blown. I don't feel overly comfortable playing with that kind of power so I'm glad I called him rather than just playing inside the box.

Thanx for the info in my other thread, I've got my welder going now but its pouring rain and I need to weld outside so I guess it will have to wait a day or 2

i know what knob and tube is, and i know enough about wiring to get rid of it, i just dont feel comfortable enough to go routing through a box that has issues and could be shorting out somewhere making something live that shouldnt be live

Yep, a blown fuse = a dead phase/line as many of the gents predicted......

CONGRATULATIONS glad you got her fixed

What? No sense of adventure? I like doing electrical wiring projects for my boss. I just make sure he is around to throw the switch or plug it in when I am done fixing. Sometimes he lights up and sometimes he doesn't.

As I read your original post, the word breaker appeared. So no indication of fuses being involved. One blown fuse does cause the symptoms you describe.

Knob and tube done right is superior to two wires that can get hot and melt plastic insulation.Open wires can carry more current. You didnt know that an open fuse on a 3 wire 240 volt system could do strange things. This old man did.If you look around the internet you can find photos of melted wiring that happened when circuit breakers failed to open.

What does knob and tube wiring have to do with fuses? Other than the fact that fuses were used when it was originally installed they are two separate things.

You have an excuse, I don't. I was the dummy that first thought it was a neutral, and I do this stuff for a living! Glad it was something simple and inexpensive though.
