Magetic drain plugs

I would like to make or purchase magnetic plugs for my final drives for an excavator. Anyone have a good source or make your own? Thanks

I have cut the magnet end off a Craftsman little screw starter tool and drilled the plug . Funny thing was I figured I was ruining the magnet pick up part of the tool but half the magnet stayed in it and it still worked too.

Depending on the thread you can usually find them through Mcmaster Carr. Beyond that just do a Google search, like the one I linked below, for magnetic Drain Plugs and you should be able to find what your looking for.

We bought some rare earth magnets from allelectronics.com. I believe we got the 3/8" ones. I then took my drain plug and drilled a 3/8" hole on the oil side of the plug just the same thickness as the magnet. Put the magnet in the hole and reinstall the drain plug. This works for us.

Christopher,
I was planning on doing about the same. Drill a hole on oil side slightly smaller and then press the magnet in by using vise, leaving about 3/16 to 1/4 magnet overhang on plug. Did you install your magnets flush?

We did install our magnets flush, but then again the magnets were not very thick. If they were thicker you could probably let it protrude. I was really surprised how much metallic debris we collected on the magnet on a fresh rebuild, and the following oil changes.
