3/8 Drive Ratchet and Socket Set

First, thanks for all the great replies. I looked into all the suggestions. I was looking hard at a Williams set and S-K sets suggested. At a pawn shop I found a used 47 piece Cornwell set. I had not heard of them. I looked them up on the internet, it sure sounds like good product. Anyway, it had exactly what I wanted. Of course it was used but the molded case with the reaised letter/number sizes was in good shape, a key item I wanted to keep track of the sockets. Anyway, I bought it out the door for $100. They wanted $160, MRSP is $742, and you can find a set at the discount places for about $400. Again, I know little about them but I went with it.
By the way, I am now retired but when I grew up on the farm my Dad had a 1/2" S-K set that was pretty indestructable. We used it for everything. I did crack one socket when I hammered it on a rounded or miss-shaped nut. So, it was interesting they come in as a strong suggestion still yet today.
Thanks again, Paul

Good to hear Paul! Cornwell has a good reputation too. They run a route around here like Snap-on does. Good tools at a much better price than Snappy.

Nice. Can't really beat it. Like Chris said, they are have route trucks just like Snap-On and Mac around here. Very nice set for $100.

Excellant name in tools!

I've never seen Cornwell around here... from what I understand through reading these forums... they are a good tool tho.
Just for a reference point tho... you can buy a similar set from NAPA, over the counter, 6 days a week for about the same money. If you wait until it's on sale.... probably 30% less than that. Comes with an over the counter lifetime warranty so you don't need to go tracking down someone's route truck to get replacements. The price the pawn shop was asking was outrageous. The MSRP is completely asinine.

I've got some 3/4" drive Cornwell sockets. They were in a box of miscellaneous items I picked up at an auction. Those sockets had obviously spent quite some time either under water or 1/2 buried in the mud. They were extremely rusty and ugly. I cleaned them with a sand blaster and wire brush and found that other than being ugly, they are still very good sockets and the rust did not effect the fit or function in the least. They now live in my tool chest along side all of the shiny tools.

cornh0le makes good solid tools, they are normally just lacking the subtle details like snap on might have, like a sharp edge or something not beveled as nice, little things that only someone working continuously with their tools would notice. I had been buying some of their stuff, the I got a new dealer and he likes to "highlight" the big dealerships and quit all the smaller shops so I've traded back my broken cornwells to my faithful snap on. Tool truck tools are all about how your dealer takes care of you.

I had never heard of them until they were featured on the show Gears. Never seen a truck dealer in my area.Just Snap-On Mac and Matco.

Retired, I FULLY agree with you! But, of course, I"m NOT retired like the OP and have NO need for a simple tool set that costs THAT much!

In Canada, we just wait a bit and these always go on sale for $12-13 and are guaranteed forever......
