Cement mixer gurus (and geometry guys)

Hey everyone.

I recently got a cement mixer that I am going to fix up. It had a real cheesy set of legs on it and I am going to make it a trailer mount.

The drum has a large cast gear around the base and looks like it was originally designed for a wide belt.

What I would like to know is what the capacity of the unit is and how much concrete I can mix in it.

The opening has a circumference of 56" the base is 79" and the depth is 24".

I scored an 8hp Briggs gear reduction engine for a song and plan to use a roller chain to connect.

Using your figures I compute the total volume to be 5 cu. ft. How much concrete you can mix in a 5 cu. ft. mixer is something I don't know how to calculate.

Does quarter bag refer to the amount of cement you would use per load? I often use a 1:2:3 mix for general purpose concrete. That would produce 6/4 of a foot or 1.5 cu ft. of concrete. (Slightly less, actually, because you have to divide the volume of the separate dry ingredients by 1.15 to get the true volume of the concrete that they will produce.) A 5 cu. ft. mixer would make a bigger load than that.

It looks simular in size to one I borrowed last summer to pour about fourteen hundred pounds of premix. It took one eighty pound bag if I remember right and with that handle dump lever on the side that was all you could handle. My concrete pouring days are over. The drum doesn't turn very fast.
 
About 40 years ago I borrowed a mixer about that size, and lowered the footings in our house. The only thing I remember is each mix it needed 2 shovels of concrete and I think 6 shovels of whatever I was using of aggregate. That old house is still standing.

Now I get the enjoyable task of fabricating the frame and trailer.

Would recomend that you use a belt rather than chain tho. Belt drive will give some if you need it to. Never seen one with direct chain drive. We had one just like that on the farm only with an electric motor. The belt will run off the big pulley fine if you get it lined up right and should be a good speed off your reduction motor.
 
Stan--the 1/4 bag does refer to the cement concrete of the mix.and yes the yield on a concrete mix is always less than the total of the ingredients. The actual volume that it will mix well is dependent on the rotation speed,height of paddles and amount of residual hardened concrete in the drum.
we used to regularly inspect transit mix trucks and down rate their capacity as things wore.
 
definitly belt drive no chain
start out with 6 rounded shovels washed 3/4 stone
4 rounded shovels of sand
2 rounded shovels portland cement
probably all that mixer will want
I use a round point digging shovel might have to back off a little with a square shovel
keep the 3-2-1 ratio and go easy on the water

I'm not Jon, but I would think a V-belt would work on the flat pulley on the mixer and a V-pulley on the engine. Better check the speed, with that speed reducer on the engine you might be a little slow.

Looks like most small mixers ,the ones I used take 3 #60 bags . Any more and spilled out ,mixed poorly . Did all the footings on my basement project. I see bag mix in my sleep. Thank goodness we had two mixers going . usually 100-110 bags per pour . 4-5 pours ? If I remember right
 
V belt will run on a flat pulley you just have to make sure the alignment is good. Depending on the gear reduction you may need a larger pulley on the motor. You will also need to make it so the belt can loosen for starting the motor or it may be difficult to get running. I had one on a sprayer pump and couldn't figure out why it wouldn't start till I loosened the belt then it started right up. They don't have enought hp to start under load.
 
Brad, you said it has a cheesy set of legs on it? I have one just about like it. I would just mount the legs to the trailer. The drum has to be on a fairly good angle or they don't mix good. If you put the opening higher it will hold more but not mix very well. It looks like it has some notches to make it adjustable. You may have to just play with it. Mine has a small electric motor(1/2 hp off of swamp cooler fan) it turns it just fine but the gas would be great for portability but may need more speed with the gear reduction.
