Ok here goes on an oil problem. I bought a Hydro drive cub and first thing, I changed all the fluids. The oil in the hydro was black but not stinky. Ran the tractor around for a couple of minutes and the new oil is now black again. I guess this means that I will need to change it several times till it stays clear. The question is...At $11.oo ea.qt. I do not want to change this too many times. Filter the oil? Didn"t do a thing. Ran it through coffie filter etc. Can I use some type of chemestry that you mix in to the oil and it will settle out the carbon and or crud? I have heard of the stuff they use in water treatment and also for bio fuel clearing. What do you guys think. Thanks Jeffcat

So you bought a used Cub with hydro static drive? Is the cub an older model garden tractor?
I would think that after 1 change out the oil should be good? Maybe a seal inside the unit is rotting away and making the oil black. Is there anyway to flush the system, such as fill the unit to the top and then drain without running the tractor?

I have an early Allis Chalmers 918 H. I needed to change the hoses, on the hydro, going to the filter, so I changed the oil. It was clear, and it has over 1000 hours on it.

Perhaps all the oil was not drained. Did it refill with the correct quantity? Not familiar with the cubs but perhaps it may need to be drained at more than one point.
Good Luck,
Andy

Just use automatic trans fluid or AW46 to flush it. Alot of hydros use ATF or AW 46 for fluid... sure isn't $11/qt either.
