snowblower engine....goofed up the magnets

All,

I tried to pry off the flywheel of a horizontal 8 hp (supposedly) tecumseh from the late 1980"s snowthrower engine due to weak spark.

Fast forward, I got the fywheel off, but managed to crack free 3 of the six magnets off the inner part of the flywheel.

What kind of glue do they use to hold them on?

Also, what parts should I replace as long as I am in there?

Any help is appreciated...

Hello dennis minn,

Checking for obvious breaks in the windings, coil cracks and bad wiring. Make sure you have a grounded coil as well. Check the spark plug lead for cracks Also kill switch grounding wire. Note that there is another magnet out of sinc, unless that is the 3rd one you mentioned. Coil gap should be checked as well, Spacing of those magnets is CRITICAL! J B WELD?........ Good Luck

Each magnet will need to be equally spaced from each other so it will be in phase to charge properly. If you plan on using the pull start rather than the electric start just leave the magnets out but take all of them out to keep the flywheel in balance.

Aren't the magnets necessary to create the spark? We have an older style tecumseh with two magnets on the inside of the flywheel. One came loose so we stuck it back on with JB weld, but it has not run much since then, so i still consider it a temporary fix rather than a real repair. Maybe there is a better epoxy available to make it a reliable machine.

I would bet you can find a used flywheel for less money than what the proper adhesive would cost. Less hassle and a lot safer too.

Too late now but you have to use the proper pullers to take fly wheels off.It helps to have a service manual for the engine you are working on.

Impressive that you cracked a cast iron flywheel. Yes, you need the correct puller to avoid this.

I would not use that flywheel again. Cracked magnets are the least problem with this. Imagine how much centrifugal force this part has to withstand at 3600 rpm. This could well be a hand grenade at full speed.

Besides when you crack any magnet you interrupt the magnentic field and set up a new one. Each magnet can now have 2 fields and I'm sure the magneto won't like that.

Look for a replacement fywheel. Tecumseh has been around a long time and there's lots of spare parts around.

I had all six come loose when I worked on mine. It was a real challenge to put them back in the correct order. I had to make several tries floating them on a wooden block to determine north and south poles. From that and matching the markings I was able to put them back in the correct order.
I glued them back on with JB Weld.

I had a magnet on a 12 volt water pump on a motor home come loose. I glued it back in with construction adhesive. It never came loose again.
