O/T ground thing

Used my AC 4 yrs. ago to dig a small frog pond and near it up to 100ft away, I find small mounds of soil about 6" in dia, about 4" tall, with a hole about 1" in dia in it. The dirt looks like it is pushed up when it was soft, with small amount here, there, all around it making a circle. For the life of me and my friend from CA 'expert', we can't figure it out. She thinks maybe a star mole. No where else are they. About 7 scattered around. Don't know how to do pics. Bugging me. Snake? Southern Michigan. Thanks.

MI AC Parsons,

I don't know anything about Michigan, but we have hills similar to what you describe here in Tennessee. They are always in bottom land, near a creek. They are caused by crawfish from the creek.

I quit baling hay on a lady's field after last year. The crawfish mounds were so prevalent, I didn't want to risk my sickle bar mower, plus I had to run in one lower gear for raking and baling.

They're a real nuisance around here.

Ya know, you guys are incredible. Lived in MI all my life, obviously, I've never seen this before. Exactly what the pic shows.
googled crawdad holes, and it looked like it was shot near my little pond. Relieved what they are, dirt is soft, we will coexist...and they survive our winters? Thanks so much. wasn't sure if I should put it on here, but now I know what they are. Thanks again wp

The water table must be shallow there. Not more than 5-6 feet or you would not have crawdads.

When we were kids, we'd dangle a string tied to a tiny piece of ribbon down the hole to see if we could pull them out. Sometimes could - sometimes couldn't. Doesn't take much to entertain a country boy.
