need some info please.. am consiering going to our local cable co. for using their phone service..dont know about it , but they say i need a special arris telephony modem for their phone..i use their internet service and have a cable modem to do that. can you give some of your experience with using cable phone service. thanks

I have used the same cable provider for internet and phone for about three years.

Experience has been generally good but there have been times when everything is down, rendering one unable to use either internet or telephone to report issues.

You will need a different modem for internet/telephone service. The provider will likely force you to rent one from them for a monthly charge.

I have a Time Warner cable bundle , phone service is great. I like unlimited free long distance and the ability to call forward to any place in the United States. Also got more TV channels and HD all in the bundle and saved $20 per month.

I have used a magic jack for years.

They have ironed the bugs out and it works great for about 8 bucks a year. You can unplug the tiny module and take it anywhere that has an internet connection and use it there.

I also have a cellphone.

We went cable phone about 8 years ago and don't regret it. We were paying $70.00 or more for service with Frontier and went to Comcast cable and pay around $20.00 a month and can call any where in USA at no extra charge. As said by others if power goes out no service but cell phone takes over from there.

thanks for the info.. our cable suggest we rent or buy this special modem from them..i looked online and saw one for over a hundred dollars..i think they want $50. per month rental. at&t usually charges about $45. per month. have a good day

Just recently switched from AT&T land line to Cox Communications internet phone. The modem they provided has an 8hr battery backup built in.

Have had Time Warner cable phone service with a cable modem that had phone jack and a battery backup, so phone service worked with power off (for a while). Recently switched to 'Earthlink' service that uses same modem and is exactly like Time Warner, but about $25 per month cheaper, plus no modem rental.
The fine print with Cable Phone says that they do not promise it will work with fax machines, but it seems to be OK. Ocassionally you have to resend a fax.

Check to see how the 911 calls go in.
If it doesn"t give 911 Your address, It could add
responce time in an emergency.
Also is harder on Children when they have to call for help.

thanks again everyone.all the talk about changing to another phone is enlighting to me. we have been with at&t at least 30 + yrs.but its always another few cents here and a few there. it adds up. we have a cell phone, but were limited to the two companies for a land line. sounds like some of you are getting a good deal..

We moved last fall, only 8 miles and same city. AT&T jerked us all over the place, didn't want to let us keep our old number that we had had since dial phone. And the number they wanted to give was not local. We complained that all local calls would be long distance, and they said that you wouldn't know until the monthly bill came.
We happened to go into Radio Shack, they are selling for Verizon. They have a system that you buy a base unit from them, and you plug your land line phones into it. It plugs into 120v, and has a battery back-up good for about 3 days. This base connects to the same cell signal as cell phones. Yon can take it with you and have phone service anywhere you can get a cell signal. And you can keep your land line number.
There is a set-up fee. That and the base unit was about $70. With a $20. monthly fee. You can call anywhere from anywhere, just need a cell signal, no long distance charges.
Going to Florida for the winter, take your home phone with you.

i have looked into some of the suggestions offered. will continue tomorrow. thanks again have a good night

Went to Charter cable phone a couple years ago here and next door at my folks. Needless to say I just switched them back to AT &T. Cable was cheap until intro offer was done, then costs equaled out, if not a little more for cable phone. The taxes and some other add ons are on cable phone too. It was a drag dealing with cable co. and phone went out when powere went out.

Yes but most cable systems do not have battery backup for their cable equipment once it leaves your house.

better off going with another company as the cable companies are pricey with not many features. I use voipo and they usually run specials where you get 2 years for 7 and change a month. otherwise it is like 15 but you pay year or 2 in advance.
they send an adapter you plug into the cable modem or router and good to go.
they have lots of ways to handle calls and blacklists.also you can text to and from your email to cell phones.voicemail emailed to you.
great company and great service if you need it.

I use voipo.com with my cable internet. used it for years has 911 ports your number or use one of theirs. has a fallback option where if the internet or power is down you can tell it to forward all calls to a cell number. really lots of great useful features at no extra costs unlike the cable companies or even vonage.

jack-iowa...thanks.. i looked at web site.. seems ok..it apparently does not provide toll free number for support...i am planing on connecting one of my pcs to tv for a monitor. and will need a router..does the router you use have ports that i can do that.. have a good nite

I know they have email support and probably voice too but calls cost nothing with them. also I think there is a toll free to get info.if you have more than 1 computer or wireless device if you do not have a router now you will need one.computer to tv has nothing with the network so does not matter. the box they send has a connection to hook up to your computer if you only have one.then it plugs into the cable modem.
I have about 10 things connected so I have the router. they can tell you what all to do to get it connected. they use all usa people for support so no language issues. they have a live chat function on weekdays that you can ask them for info.
they are the lowest I could find and the best I had to deal with .

thanks again for the help. i think i now have all the info i need, so now i can contact the VOIPO CO. and get started.. have a great day,
