For NI-MH fans only

I recently purchased an 18v Ni-Mh battery for $40.74. It's rated at 3000 ma-hr. Dewalt's XRP is only 2400ma-hr. Their Li ions are rated close to the XRP, but in my opinion, it takes 2 Li ions to equal one 3000 ma-hr battery.

I purchased the same battery, which is only made in China, Dewalt to my knowledge doesn't sell any, about 5 years ago and it's still going strong.

I was expecting to see a New Idea corn picker mounted on a Massey Harris tractor! ;)

My practical take on lithium ion batteries vs nimh vs nicad depends on the use of the devices. With nicads we all learned that occasional use ruins a battery in no time. The home user that uses a drill/driver really hard once every six months and keeps in in a drawer somewhere finds out his nicads are always dead when he needs them. It's almost as bad with nimh batteries. Both are made to use regularly and often. The memory effect is well known.

Lithium ion batteries are best known for long storage life, and for the most part, are at full power for the duration of the discharge cycle and recharging them doesn't take nearly as long.

I'll quit rambling, for the person who uses the device every day and needs big amp hour ratings, the nickel metal hydride batteries are really good. For the ones who use them occasionally, once a week or less, the lithium ion batteries will be a better choice in my opinion. I have several Panasonic drills, impact drivers, and even a circular saw for metal cutting, all with 14.4 volt lithium batteries that will stay up and ready to use for months at a time.

The self discharge of a Ni Cad or Ni MH battery used to be really awful. If you did not use them within 48 hrs of charging, they were 50% gone.
New technology of those batteries has made that problem a lot better. The last Ni cads I had would retain a useful charge for 2-3 weeks. The last pack of Ni MH batteries guarntee they will retain 90% of full charge for a year.
Much more cost effective and reliable for someone who does not use them constantly.

I guess that "dates" me. N I always meant New Idea . M H meant Massey Harris. this proves that I am of the older generation.LOL.
