Preliminary handicap lift plan

This is the plan so far for the handicap lift I talked about last week. I've been refining it since I took on the job and I think I've got it mostly figured out. It is going to be like a mini forklift boom.

The side rails will be bent out of 3/16 plate and will be 3 1/8" x 1 1/2" inside dimension. Then I'm going to line it with 1/2" thick UHMW plastic. This is a very tough fibrous plastic that is very slick. It was used by Schlagel Man. to make slides for grain gates and so I'm sure it will work as a wear surface here. The mast will be 4' long and will be attached to the outside of the loader frame and be 18" off the ground.

The inner frame will be made of 2x2x3/16 tube and be 36" long and so even on the ground will have about 18" still in the mast so it should be very stable.

The mast will be mounted to the main loader bracket so it stays on the tractor even if the loader is taken off. I will start by bolting 2 angles to the lower frame where there is a 3/8" plate. Then weld 2-6" channels to them to get out to the mast, they will be welded to the outside of the mast.

I bought a 1700 lb. lifting and pulling winch to do the work. It is designed to be for lifting loads and claims to have excellent control and holding ability. It will be mounted to the top of the mast. It has a 7 ft./min pull rate on the inner wrap, but I'll leave all the cable on. I've bought 2 extra pulleys so I'm hoping for a 1 minute lift time to lift the 3' that is needed. I may have to remove 1 pulley to get that. It is remote operated so he will have easy access.

The standing platform will be 14"(the max between the loader and tire) by 24" and have a pipe railing to hold on to.

Would like a advice if you see any obvious shortcomings. Thanks.

The only thing I will add is we use a lot of UHMW where I work and I mean a lot we buy it by the sheet up too 2'' thick to line chutes and hoppers. But the on thing it will not hold up to is sunlight. If the area where you are using it is covered its not a problem if it is exposed eventually it will start cracking. I screwed a small piece of it to the back deck of my boat for a bait prep station and within a year it was cracking and breaking apart. Just my 2 cents.

All in in all sounds like you have a good plan

The 1600 lb rated power tailgate on my 1 ton has a slotted piece of 2" hss with a slider block inside that the tailgate hinge is mounted too. One side would make a dandy slide for a person or wheelchair lift.

I was thinking of a camper jack with a guide rail as you describe. using a variable speed cordless drill, the whole thing could be quite easy to operate. Two camper jacks setup with a small chain drive might eliminate the guides as well. Jim
