My daughters 2007 Ford Focus has another problem now. She was driving slow and the engine RPM's went up she said to 3000 then back down again. Was she imagining things or can something not right make this happen? Any ideas or suggestions

Intake gasket? just had them replaced in a 3.8 ford mini van, year is 2000 . it was reving up around 3000 when you started it then up and down at low rpm.

If she were imaging it are not I would investigate it and commend her for reporting it to you. I would not let it go as its OK drive it the next warring she gets of any kind may kill it and good old dad told her to drive it.

You have a good one their that is looking after your pocket book don't shake her off she's a good detective. I tell all the new drivers to learn whats normal and report to dad/mom whats not ASAP its their money your are blowing let them make the call.

I will ask her about start up rpm's. I thought she said she was starting out and it reved up, then back down, but will ask about start up. The up and down at low rpm like you mentioned may be an intake air leak somewhere then.

She lives 300 miles from me so I can't see her on a
daily basis. If I can get a good idea of what is
wrong with it I could swap cars with her and bring
her car home and fix it.

She does keep a close watch on her car. Prior to
this one she bought an old chevy blazer that a
dealer ripped her off on. She likes this Ford but it
has had a few things go wrong as with and used car.

If it is like the Fords that I own. It is the throttle body needs cleaning. Google throttle body cleaning of that model
I have cleaned one and the other was a Ford recall

Shop that fixed Mine did a "smoke test" to be sure that it was the intake gasket I think they pump smoke in to the engine

Check the Idle Air Control motor. That is what controls the amount of air going into the engine at idle. The get carbon buildup in them and it can cause them to stick sometimes. They can either idle way up or not idle at all, or any combination between.

Not a Ford but my Dodge has done that twice for me. Once when I was not in the vehicle. I was out opening the door to the shop and it took off like a raped ape but by the time I got back to the vehicle it had slowed back down to normal. Other time I was parked in vehicle talking to some guys and it took off for a couple seconds but before I could turn key off it came back down. This is with a new idle control motor. Both times was with warmed engine after driving several miles. It is some glitch in system telling idle motor to open but it left no codes. I have had door locks go up and down when I use turn signals a few times about 6 years ago but never happened again. Really no different than this computer locking up now and then. That is why the space shuttle always used back up computers and even then more than one of them would act up at same time.

I got an update from my daughter and she said it does not happen while the car is idling just when she is going down the road in it, in drive. I presume at a slow speed.

dont forget the infamous coil on plug system. when the coil goes bad it can do the same thing.
my 2004 escape has gone thru 2 of the coil on the plugs at $70 each.

Check out problems caused by a bad TPS which is throttle position sensor.

On her car one coil was replaced twice and one more once. Bought the coils at O'Rileys and got the life time warranty. If this is the problem might have to use the warranty.
